    When to change heads?

When do you guys usually change your drum heads? Is there some rule of thumb that you follow other than "...when they sound crappy"? Do you change your snare head as often or more/less often than your toms? How about the kick head? No doubt ... heads are expensive ... especially when it seems...

    Ssssssss

Here's a rough mix of a demo I'm doing for a band (I'm playing bass on it, though). I didn't use a pop screen on the vocal mic. I think I avoided the pops ok ... but there's a good amount of sibilence in the track (there's lots of Ssss in this tune ... Ssee, Sstarss, Ssun, Sshine ... etc ...)...

    GT BK #2

OK, GT ... I added some drums and slight keyboard stuff. Not much, I know ... but it seemed pretty full with the drum machine/guitar/bass going. Wasn't sure what else would be good to add. I do think it needs vocals ... but I suck with lyrics. :( Let me know what you think. GT/BK #2 - 2.5MB

    DSP/FX virtual pack

Anybody have any comments on this software? DSP/FX Virtual Pack I'm thinking of getting this instead of a TC Elec M*One or Lexicon MPX500. I'm specifically interested in the StudioVerb and AcousticVerb. My plan is to use the live spdif I/O on a LynxOne. What do you think? Good idea? ...

    Wireless Home Networks

I'm thinking of getting a new PC upstairs. Also thinking of setting up a network between the studio PC and this new one to share files and disk space. If I get a wireless network card, am I just asking for interference problems with my audio both in the PC and outside? ) Is it better to...

    overclock

I've seen a couple references to overclocking ... How is this accomplished and ... If a guy (me) doesn't know much about it ... should he screw around with stuff like this or just leave it alone? I have a 366Mhz celeron... which is so far working fine ... but a little more juice is always a good...

    My gripe about the POD

I love it in every way ... except it seems really noisy. Lotsa hiss... even on the clean models w/o distortion. Bums me out big time. :( Anyone else have this problem ... and able to get around it? I know I don't have the quietest gear ... but everything else (reverbs, synths, etc.) is...

    Back to basics

Does anybody have any recommendations for basic rhythm/pattern books? How about any books on full kit techniques? I got a Dave Weckl video a while back, and even though it was worth the money just to watch him play close up ... I'm nowhere near doing any of the stuff he can do. :D So, if...

    Just drums

Drums drums drums ... seems like that's all I ever do these days! :) Anyway, I've been working on the snare quite a bit lately and I think I've made some progress. For me, just tuning it is difficult ... I'm still learning what sounds good and what doesn't. I cranked it pretty tight this...

Does longer tape = more problems?

I always thought ADAT tape only came in 42min and 60min versions. Then, while looking for good deals on Maxell brand tape ... I ran across this site at Markertek.com (sorry, they don't have alot of info at this site ... and no pics) $12.99 USD for 182 minutes seems like a fantastic deal! ...

    Here's a new one

Just another jam. I've been working a lot on the drum sound lately ... so I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions that you may have. It's a small file. Thanks! Jam3 (1.2MB, 1:01, 160kbps)

    Great site on Studio Construction

and the best part is ... it's not Auralex.com ;) http://www.lis.net.au/%7Ejohnsay/Acoustics/Titles/recording_studio_design.htm Many diagrams included and easy to read. I especially like the sample studio blueprints even though I can only get Garage Studio1 and Bedroom Studio to work...

    kick micing

I have an AKGD112 inside the drum (w front head on)about 5" from the front head pointed directly at the beater. I like this set up the best so far. I don't use two mics for kick ... but here's a link to a particularly good thread that was in Recording Techniques a while back. Ed uses an...

    Poor Man's Monitor Isolation

I had some problems with some rattles while playing back through monitors. Not rattles in the monitors themselves, but some stuff that's on the desk that I have them on. I just rolled 4 balls for each monitor out of some Stik-Tak, set the monitors on them and no more rattles. Plus, I think...

    Lyrec TR532

I ran across this guys site tonight ... http://member.rivernet.com.au/gwagner/forsale/forsale.htm he's selling a Lyrec 2" 24trk machine for $4200. Complete with autolocator. That seems pretty cheap, doesn't it? Never heard of Lyrec before ... so maybe maybe that's why the small asking...

    Microtech Geffel M930

Does anyone have any comments on this model, or this manufacturer in general? My only experience with MG was when my brother-in-law had an intermittant buzz problem with one (I think it was a UM92, that's a guess though) It wouldn't go away no matter who he sent it to. When it didn't buzz it...

    Eject, Dammit!!

A tape is stuck in my LX20!! Seems like I only have technical problems when I record someone other than me! I suspect the tape is at fault, but I've been using Quantegy brand since I got these decks and until now ... no problem. I've had minor problems before, but usually resolved by...

    Stereo Mic Attachment

I just got one of these cool little gadgets. Makes stereo micing much easier to set up and keep in place ... I also freed up a mic stand which is very cool. Just thought I'd share. :)

    Who did "Feedback" or "Parallel"?

Trying to clean up my mp3s! I downloaded these cool tunes a while back. I think I got them here, but I can't find em in any old posts. Without the search, I doubt I'll figure it out alone. Please let me know if someone here did either of them ... Thanks! [This message has...

    Snare Drums

I'm a newbie drummer. Been recording them for a while ... but never got into the actual instrument that much. I recently upgraded my snare to a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute. Man ... what an improvement over the steel snare that came with this kit. Like night and day. What kind of snare drums...
