    Still allergic to digital ?

In it's current state I don't think AI is going to be breaking new ground any time soon. It's designed to analyze existing music and form a unique derivative. In less than stellar form, that's basically what a lot of artists are already doing. Maybe AI can make music that sounds "nice", or...

    Still allergic to digital ?

People can make the argument that digital is technically superior and be correct in what they're saying. Much lower distortion and noise, extended flat frequency range, wow & flutter, yadda yadda. It's almost interesting, but doesn't really say anything about aesthetics. Seems a bit of an...

Is it worth upgrading to WA-87 or SA-87 from NT1A

Ha! Reminds me of that guy on Youtube singing about how United Airlines broke his Taylor guitar. Crazy. But yeah, air freight can be like putting your ribbon inside a kick drum.

Is it worth upgrading to WA-87 or SA-87 from NT1A

Might not be so much of an issue if they were stowed in a pressurized cabin. Even still the pressure changes that make your ears pop when the altitude changes might stretch out the ribbon. Not an issue with ground or sea shipping.

    Gibson Les Paul Tribute

I played one a couple of years back that a friend ended up buying. Chambered body like the studio series - cuts down the weight quite a lot. The pickups were the 490 R & T combination in this one. I think some of them have a 498T bridge pickup. Can't comment on that one. I like the 490's a lot...

Microphone equalization (guitar cab + Shure SM57)

The only thing that matters when you're recording a cabinet is what it sounds like through the monitors, thus on the recording. It's common to place the 57 right close to the grill cloth on the cabinet, which is not how it will sound in the room. It can help to get the cabinet away from large...

    Spectrum Analyzers. Great tool!

Audio recording follows two different mindsets. The technical side with all the math and physics, and the artistic side which boils down to - is this arrangement of sound appealing or not? To me, a spectrum analyzer is very useful for the technical side and close to irrelevant for the artistic...

Roland JC-120, should I get it?

Lab Series amps were pretty good. Gallien-Krueger. I had a small Yamaha 1x12 combo that was pretty nice. 100 watts and surprisingly loud and heavy for what it was. Pignose... The only red knob Fender I have is "The Twin". Not solid state but it's a total beast. Some of their ss offerings are...

Roland JC-120, should I get it?

I bought mine 30 years ago. The clean sound with the chorus is definitely where this amp comes into its own wheelhouse, but aside from that it's just a good, solid amp. I used to use it a lot with JB humbuckers and an SD-1 in front. It's versatile. If anyone wants to say you can't do crunch...

Roland JC-120, should I get it?

I'm not sure there was such a thing as a JVM power section in 1987. I'm guessing the Marshall in question was something like a Plexi with a master volume mod. https://equipboard.com/pros/joe-satriani/roland-jazz-chorus-120

Roland JC-120, should I get it?

For one thing, this thread is 16 years old. Also, there are a number of metal players and countless others that have gotten good crunch tones out of a JC-120. Joe Satriani comes to mind. The built in distortion is close to useless IMO but the amp takes pedals very well. eg. "Parts of Surfing...

    String brands and tension

I have very limited experience with the Ric 325, but shorter scale has less tension so it makes sense to me that 20 3/4 scale could be fine with 12's. I'll defer to those with experience. The Ric 650 guitars are different animals. 24 3/4 scale. They're around 2 1/8 wide at the 12th fret, which...

Brand new to this, when would I record something inverted phase, or why?

The phase button in Reaper or on your mic preamp will reverse the polarity of the signal, meaning it will shift it 180 degrees out of phase. So if you're using 2 mics lets say for aggregate drum kit capture (like overheads), it might be fun to pan them hard left and right for a stereo image...

How to make my VO sound like its a voicemail?

If you have a DAW that allows you to encode A-Law or u-Law PCM (telephone signal processing) at around 8 bits or so it might help. It's not "Linear PCM" as we normally use for music, so the signal should be very compressed and band limited, like a phone signal. Then convert back to the linear...

    Bass line disappears

There is nothing in fixed point linear PCM digital audio to represent signals greater than 0 dBFS. The red lights at the top of the bass and master meters are telling you that you went over. It causes digital clipping and aliasing and sounds nasty if there is enough of it. Line level is usually...

What SPLS Block Size in REAPER?

Removing the pop filter from a SM58 will change the sound slightly. Less muffled, more prone to picking up vocal plosives. Closer to an SM57, but without the influence of the 57's rather unique pop filter. Your call as to whether or not it's necessary.

What SPLS Block Size in REAPER?

I was thinking more along the lines of an MD409 or the e609 or 906 for hanging the mic from the cable in front of the speaker. They're side address mics unlike a 421 or SM57. The 421 gets lots of love, but I know of a guy that describes it as having a built-in flanger from the wonky off axis...

What SPLS Block Size in REAPER?

I've seen people do that for live sound reinforcement. It can work okay with the little square Sennheisers.

What SPLS Block Size in REAPER?

For what it's worth I'm not really a huge fan of the ADA sound. I know you love that thing, but to me it sounds like the '80's in a way that I would not describe as good. But hey, that's just me. What do I know? If LF boominess is an issue you might want to think about mic choice. The M88 has...
