    Is it possible

I usually have a scratch track, just to use as a placeholder. I don't worry if I have all the words or have to stop singing to do a tricky passage. It's a guide to keep track of where I am in the song. Then I build from there.

anybody still rocking the hard drive digital recorders from in the 00's ?

I just fed the audio output from the SR-18 to the AW. I'm not a "midi guy". Its something that I've fiddled with, but I just prefer using audio.

    Treble bleed circuit

I had v6.6 a while back. I have access to an older version of Excel. You might try the 97-2003 version of 6.6 in LibreOffice. Make sure you enable macros. I think that works.

    New DAW PC build 2025

An Nvidia card is not needed for DAW work. Onboard Intel UHD graphics will run just fine, and it eliminates an extra fan which would add extra noise. Video cards are notorious for running warm, thats why many have dual fans just to keep cool. If you're doing lots of video work, then a...

Looking for Class B tube preamplifier or amplifier, how many can you remember?

It's not the type of tube. It's the configuration. In a Class A system, there is one tube, and it amplifies everything. The voltages swings from maximum to minimum to produce the output. When there is no signal, the tube is still conducting so it runs hot. That's why they are...

Who still mixes with a console?

That was the hot setup for PA systems in the late 60s/early 70s. If a band came in with two of those monsters in the van you knew they were serious! Plus you could easily run them with a 35W Bogen PA amp. You didn't need 500 watts of power to be heard over the drums and guitars. :giggle:

Self-releasing physical media: CDs, USB, tapes, vinyl

There is a reason why newer players will be better able to read burned CDs. The lasers/photodiode detectors used in newer CD and DVD players are better than the ones initially used back in the 80s. They have been continually refined over 40 years. With DVD, they use a shorter wavelength to be...

High end recording gear vs high end audiophile listening gear.

I ran across this yesterday and it reminded me of how we can perceive things that don't exist. He takes a while to get there, but in the end, proves that it isn't wise to trust people's comments about how wonderful tweaks to audio gear can be just by "listening".

Self-releasing physical media: CDs, USB, tapes, vinyl

For locally owned stores like I'm talking about, go inside and see if they have the work of local bands. If so, then approach the owner and let him know you're putting out a CD. I don't know what the going rate is for wholesale CDs, but if you can get CDs pressed in a jacket for $1.50 and...

    New DAW PC build 2025

PorterhouseMusic here on HR just snagged a $550 mini PC and was up a running quickly. 32GB, AMD Ryzen™ 7 8845HS, 1TB SSD. He said it's quiet and was a breeze to set up. https://homerecording.com/bbs/threads/dedicated-daw-laptop.430337/ Getting an Ultra I9 with 128GB of RAM is like...

Self-releasing physical media: CDs, USB, tapes, vinyl

I would toss the cassette. If you have a cassette deck at home, you can always burn one from the CD or your digital files. If someone has a cassette deck at home, they can do the same AND not have to worry about the cassette getting mangled or just wearing out. Sell them a CD and let them...

Need ears on a new song. What is its genre?

I think that in the US and most of Europe, it would be considered "World Music" primarily based on the rhythmic pattern.

    normalize vox?

How close is "close"? You don't need to be 2 inches from a cardioid mic, remember that sound gets lower with distance. A few inches can do a lot, and to be honest, most people like the proximity effect as it gives a nice full sound. If you're 24 inches away, then you have plenty of room to...

How do you make a track louder without maxing out your headroom?

You sent 3 identical tracks that were normalized to the master? Of course it will be in the red. Audio is additive. Combine two identical files, and it adds up to 6dB more signal. In that case, turn the master down until it doesn't hit the red at all. You can try a little experiment to...

How do you make a track louder without maxing out your headroom?

I'm not exactly sure where you're losing your way here. Maybe it's your understanding about volume, gain, and normalization. Gain in recording isn't the same as adding "gain" on a guitar with a distortion pedal. In recording, adding gain is the same as adding volume, at least until you...

Money pit but which is less? Own: Fostex R8, Akai MG614. Considering selling for: Tascam 488 MKii .

I was watching a video the other day about the AD conversion process. The poster was trying to show how much variation do you get from different converters. To even get a real difference, the person went through about 200 round trips. Even then, the change was really minimal. Yet there...

Money pit but which is less? Own: Fostex R8, Akai MG614. Considering selling for: Tascam 488 MKii .

Yeah, I see all the talk about preamps and transformers, changing capacitors and ICs, etc. I've heard gobs of comparisons of this, that and the other preamps including using 48/24 wave files. I can change or adjust a microphone and make 20 times more difference. The two biggest items in...

Money pit but which is less? Own: Fostex R8, Akai MG614. Considering selling for: Tascam 488 MKii .

Ok, you're concerned that a 35 yr old tape deck that has needed two repairs recently is "cheaply made"? The Akai is more like like 40- 50 yrs old. Think about that for a bit. These machines are probably older than half of the people who log onto this forum. The Tascam is the baby at only...

    normalize vox?

Normalizing is nothing more than finding the highest peak, looking at the difference between that and 0dBFS, and adding that much gain. If your highest peak is -12.3, then normalizing will add 12.3dB of gain to EVERYTHING, peaks and noise floor. If your noise floor is low enough that it...
