Hi, I used to do some home recording in the 90s but got out of it to raise a family. Looking to get back into it but the new technology is overwhelming!
It's not really all that complex to do basic recording. Sure, if you think you need to load up 50 tracks with 30 different plugins, it can be complex. But at the core, you need an interface, a mic and a DAW. Plug them into your computer and hit record, then start playing. At that level, it's not much different from having a Tape deck, mixer and microphone.

Start simple, and increase your complexity as you learn. I think you'll be surprised at the quality you can achieve even with moderately priced gear.

Hi All,

I've been a guitarist for 30 years, been in a couple of high school bands. I did a lot of recording in my 20s using a Zoom MRS-802. I only picked up guitar again a few years ago and got a Zoom R12 (or R16?) but I found it all quite fiddly and complicated. I then bought a Focusrite Scarlett and started recording using Reaper but didn't have the time to figure out the basics, so sort of gave up..

Now 6 years later I'm ready to get into it again. Will be buying a PC, downloading Reaper, getting an audio interface and a Mic to start with. All I want to do is the basics; record one track at a time, add some eq/effects in Reaper and get a song finished. I am not worried about studio quality; the old Zoom multitrackers sound more than good enough for my needs, but I just couldn't even cut/move parts in Reaper so I need to watch some YT guidance videos.

Welcome. Our backgrounds sound fairly similar.
After struggling with thousands of $$ of mixers and R2Rs to record multitrack I finally gave in and purchased a Zoom L-12. It's pricier than the R-12, But, I find it to be extremely user friendly. I was able, after 18 months! of frustration, to record our little friendly Saturday jam trio with almost no effort or learning curve. I have it now set to record some of my own stuff, just for fun.
While I haven't had the chance to try it (I only got it last week) it has a USB port that will record your tracks directly into your DAW while simultaneously recording "live" to a SD card. You can add effects to each channel while recoding live, but the tracks going to the DAW are effect free, so you can play with them in the DAW.
Again, welcome, and good luck!

Hello all from Devon UK..

A million years ago i was a sound engineer..
Started with makeshift studio space and 4 track with lots of DIY. (Early 80s)
Built 2 (demo) studios in London with some DIY.
Changed career at 16 track and early digital mixdowns (sony F1).
Moved into computing to support family!
Kept quite a lot cassettes of artists \ mixes ..
Digitised them over the years.
In the last year have been renovating some recordings i made with an old friend from the early 80s (4 track) from these digitised tracks. I lost track of him (he became gripped by heroin.. i presumed dead to be honest but we made contact in 2021). This was my first venture into AI and the making of video imaginings using Davinci. I will be looking to see where i can post the results on this forum .

There are a few bits of vinyl out threre with my stamp on them too.
Looking forward to learning more here. It looks like i will be "renovating" more recordings with different problems soon .. will update.

Welcome. I think you will find, what you know is still relevant, just a different format, as you have already realized. I am sure many of us can learn from your experience. Looking forward to your inputs. Sounds like you have some well traveled roads under your belt.

Started my 4-track recording adventures around 1986, had to stop in the early 2010's due to hearing injuries (not audio/recording related).
2019 was just starting to record again, and twice in the span of two years, I severely injured my hands (two separate dog bite incidents)
Still slowly recovering from those injuries, and have just started to assess my gear after years of neglect, and being stored in poor conditions.

I joined because I saw Sweetbeats' U2b vids this past weekend about his adventures with a mixer/4-track I know well, and realized I had the Unobtanium he required. The service manual for the AT-RMX64 4-track that got me started in the first place.

So I'm "scanning" it myself (photographing it) in order to make it available for all who need it.
And all I ask is.... One Million Dollars!

Hello, all. I’m a singer-songwriter and acoustic guitar player who often leads a band called Buzzard Whiskey in the Salt Lake area. I have a very modest recording studio and have released a dozen or so tunes.

hello im ty. self taught music destroyer lolz jk but im terrible with lots of questions:P

What’s up?! I’m new in town. Been in punk bands forever, always hated recording. During downtime I started dabbling with a little recording for demos and practicing along by myself.

- I have a 3rd gen focusrite Scarlett solo
- An akai mpk mini that I need to learn (never played keys or messed with any midi stuff)
- I didn’t love ableton that came with my interface so I downloaded cakewalk the other day so I have to learn that too
- been debating getting some smaller montiors mainly so I don’t always need headphones

My main goal is to be able to work on demos whether it’s creating my own from scratch or adding on or tweaking songs sent to me by band members. Ultimately we are planning an online project with our friends from all over singing or doing parts on it.

Looking forward to learning the ropes by digging through posts here

Anyways I’m done rambling. Thanks gang, see ya out there

Welcome, I am always a bit sad when folks have an interface with only one mic input. I am sure you will find it limiting and get frustrated with it quite soon. Cakewalk is very useful but I strongly suggest you try Reaper...not all DAWs do everything or indeed very much equally well.

Speakers? Good idea, headphones can be rather limiting. As a starting point and assuming you are not flushed with cash, the Presonus Eris 3.5s are very good for around $100. No, they won't go loud nor low but the sound they do make is free from most vices and useful.

To get anything remotely "stooodio" monitor quality you have to look beyond $500 per pair and may here would say at least twice that.

Keep at it.

Dave.
