    my presonus hp4 died

Repaired Presonus HP4 I've had two Presonus HP4's go bad. One was six or more years old and its replacement was used, but probably a similar age. Both have a failed IC, MC33079P, in different stages. I found a replacement, MC33079PG, and have fixed one so far for less than $10. Maybe that IC is...

    Audix ADX40

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the Audix ADX40 hanging choir mic (and others for comparison). I can find next to no reviews anywhere on it. I tried one recently and it seems pretty good, but it needs a lot of gain - the specs seem to agree with super low sensitivity of 5dB/pa...

    Can flat monitors really help?

I've also found that listening to a diverse collection of professionally recorded music through my monitors as well as all my other environments has helped me learn the "sound" of each so I can better attribute what I hearing to my recording techniques or the sound of the room.

    Reaper acting weird!

1.08 is the difference between 44.1K and 48K sample rates. Did your sample rate get locked to something on only one of the days? If you play the files outside of Reaper, are they in the same key? I've found Reaper to be really smart about sample rates unless I'm using something with an external...

Detecting a clap in a noisy environment

A noise gate can help keep the ambient noise out of the detection circuit. Also, do you have a high pass/low cut filter to eliminate the rumble that can add up, making the noise floor closer to the peak of a clap. It's also nice to roll of some of the highs, too, to cut down on the noise...

Good Dynamics that aren't SM57/58 for vocals

Another vote for Sennheiser 935. It's been really great for me. Also just got a beat up ND767a and it sounds great. Have to replace the grill for all of $12.

Alesis MicTube Duo - Cheap from Alesis

In case it's useful to anyone, I was just hunting for a cheap dual mic preamp to expand a Mackie mixer and an interface with limited mic pre's and stumbled upon the Alesis MicTube Duo. Also then found Alesis is selling them for just $50. Looks like they've discontinued them and are clearing them...

    headphone repair, & or choice

I just received the K271's and I really like them. They are different. As a bass player I was a little shocked by the apparent lack of bottom in an A/B test with my 240's, but after having them on for a minute my brain adjusts and I hear everything so much clearer than in the 240's. Closed back...

    MXL 603 mod

Haven't tried it yet, but I've been curious. The component changes look easy, but machining the top to change the grill looks fairly difficult and seems to have a more profound effect according to some folks in the discussion: Gus' MXL 603s mod - Pictures/Part numbers -thanks Flatpicker

    headphone repair, & or choice

AKG K 271 MK II for $137! I did get my K240's apart a couple years ago and fix a broken wire. The wire to the left ear-piece was too short and was tugging on the solder joint. I added a piece or wire and they've been great. It was very difficult getting them back together and I almost thought I...

Mic'ing Upright Bass Live in Really Live Room

Thanks for everyone's help. Turns out the place filled to capacity and we had much less boom and wash than expected. The sound guy didn't get to grab whatever mic he was trying to get, and ended up using a DI from my pickup and I used my old fliptop for monitoring. People came up afterward to...

Mic'ing Upright Bass Live in Really Live Room

Thanks, everyone for the suggestions. Yeah, I wish I had an RE20... I'd thought of it as a cabinet mic, but if it'd do an upright live, too, that's more incentive to try to get one. Our sound guy recommended the 58 in the bridge, too. After trying my bass with and without an Underwood pickup (2...

Mic'ing Upright Bass Live in Really Live Room

Pardon the live sound question in a recording forum, but it seems like there's a fair amount of live sound experience here. Does anyone have a suggestion for mic'ing an upright bass in a small combo in an acoustically challenging room? The room is a large rotunda in an art museum, i.e. boomy...

    The Backup Plan

Hardware RAID 1 (mirroring) won't require your using another computer to get your data back if one HD crashes. The drives are redundant copies meaning you can plow through a failure. RAID 0 is striping, which is a performance boost, is not redundant and therefore will not survive a HD crash...

    Best Sounding CDs Ever?

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk Talk about dynamic range. There's straight up rock, rock with heavy orchestral arrangements, sparse trios, rich backing vocals and you can hear every part. Better still, it's really great writing.
