    Sm77?

I thought I'd revive this thread, since there's been so much talk lately about modding sm57s by removing or replacing the transformer. The sm77 is NOT a "dumbed down version of the sm57". It's a transformerless 57, but instead of just having lower output, they used aluminum wire instead of...

    Tube Mics & Pre's

Hey Teddy. Or should I call you Ray? I really hope things work out with putting together some kind of tour. We'll probably play in Ghana eventually, too, since that's where the drummer is from. I hope we're not hijacking the thread... sorry.

    Tube Mics & Pre's

The bellari stuff is relatively cheap, but not a starved plate design. The opamps are socketed and easy to upgrade. If you upgrade the opamp and tube, you'll have a worthwhile tube pre. There are other mods that are more involved (which I haven't done) but swapping the opamp and tube is easy...

    another microtonal piece

I should start taking notes on this stuff... it's really hard to remember. The percussion was mostly the same setup-- a combination of altec 673a and rca 6207 into a nortronics ra-100 and an ati m-1000. I think. The tablas were with a rca varacoustic ribbon on the bayan and a unidyne III sm57 on...

No, not that I recall. There was overall compression on the mix, but I don't think I compressed any of the individual tracks.

I use samplitude 8. I may have used a parametric eq plug (I'd have to check to see the maker) or just the one on the samplitude mixing board. It's been a year since I recorded this, so it's not so fresh in my mind. I may have used maxxbass to get some sub-bass stuff happening, but I don't remember.

I didn't record Finn MacCool and Alhambra-- they were each recorded in different studios by different engineers. Both were recorded to 2" tape, mixed on an analog board, and bounced to DAT. Not a whole lot of processing involved. I didn't know much about the recording process at the time, so I...

Hey, thanks. The drone is the drone section of the m'birangi. There's info and pictures for all the instruments on the instruments page of my site: http://www.ubertar.com

Thanks Rocketman. I didn't say I didn't like low end... I just cut some out of other things to make room for the bass. Maybe not enough if people are hearing it as muddy. Someone told me this sounded awesome through their subwoofer, so it's possible that if you guys are listening through...

How TF can I know how someone else is going to hear it? I use 5 tet a lot. It has a certain sound to it. If I hear it, I recognize it. I chose this piece to present b/c I thought it would be more accessible... that's what you get for trying to guess how other people will hear things. And I went...

    microtonal rock song

In the context of the cd, this piece is a lot less dissonant and more "normal" as far as the instruments/timbres go... it's the second to last piece, so by the time you get to it, you've forgotten what 12 tone equal temperament sounds like. :D

    another microtonal piece

This one's a little weirder, and more recent. It's in seven tone equal temperament. It's called "lizard on a branch". http://helstab.com/music/ubertar/7tet.MP3

You'll probably think I'm full of shit, but I really don't like a lot of high end. The high end in a lot of recordings hurts my ears. So it might not have anything to do with quality... I'm just rolling off the highs (or avoiding capturing them in the first place) because I don't like them. Does...
