I am reluctantly having to sell a few things to finance a headphone system like Hearback of Furman for a big session I have coming up in a month or so.
All the gear has been well looked after and never been out of the non smoking studio. I used plastic washers on all of the rack gear so there...
There are better dynamic mics than the SM57 but it works on so many different sources and that's why I have 4 of them!
If I have plenty of time I will try out a MD421, Beyer 201, EV RE20 etc but if I need a useable sound in about 10 seconds the SM57 is always there.
No way, I have yet to here plugins anywhere near as good as my outboard.
Lexicon PCM70
Sony R7
Orban 111b Spring
Roland R-880
Symetrix 606 Delay
Bel BD80 Delay
Most of those cost me less than good plugins would have!!
Here's a picture of mine.
Cost me about £75 ($150) The XLR's are all Neutrik but PCB mount which I got for under a £1 each as a job lot of eBay and the blank panels from Thomann for roughly £5 each.
The 32 Male XLR's at the top are, 16 from the live room, 12 from the dead room, 4 from the 2...
I've done exactly the same thing at my place using virtually the same blank panels.
I've got all my preamps on Male XLR's and the tie lines in the live room, booths, lounge, hallway on Female XLR's. It is far better than having to rememeber to switch the phantom power off before plugging into a...

One intersting comment I saw on this method is using a 6" speaker. The majority of hi-fi's have 6" woofers so by using a 6" speaker as your 'mic' it translates well in the real world. I don't know how true this is but the Yamaha SubKick is a 6" speaker a lot of people I have heard who have made...
