FS (UK) A-Designs, DACS, Sony, Little Labs, Kel, Epiphone

I am reluctantly having to sell a few things to finance a headphone system like Hearback of Furman for a big session I have coming up in a month or so. All the gear has been well looked after and never been out of the non smoking studio. I used plastic washers on all of the rack gear so there...

    SM57 or e609 Silver?

There are better dynamic mics than the SM57 but it works on so many different sources and that's why I have 4 of them! If I have plenty of time I will try out a MD421, Beyer 201, EV RE20 etc but if I need a useable sound in about 10 seconds the SM57 is always there.

    XLR panel

Here's a picture of mine. Cost me about £75 ($150) The XLR's are all Neutrik but PCB mount which I got for under a £1 each as a job lot of eBay and the blank panels from Thomann for roughly £5 each. The 32 Male XLR's at the top are, 16 from the live room, 12 from the dead room, 4 from the 2...

    XLR panel

I've done exactly the same thing at my place using virtually the same blank panels. I've got all my preamps on Male XLR's and the tie lines in the live room, booths, lounge, hallway on Female XLR's. It is far better than having to rememeber to switch the phantom power off before plugging into a...

Never underestimate a good analog mixer

I'm a fan of Soundcraft desks. I had a Ghost many years ago and now have a Sapphyre. The Sapphyre is beautiful, don't get me wrong I really liked the Ghost but it is a big step up. The Ghost has about 60dB crosstalk compared to over 90dB in the Sapphyre for example. I believe the Delta's were...

    Smoothest sounding reverb

I think the DP Pro is a cracking reverb also. I used to own one but it died, I WILL get another one day. I've tried quite a few reverbs, my favourites are these that I have kept, Roland R-880 Sony R7 Lexicon PCM70 Orban 111b Spring Reverb

making a speaker into a mic

One intersting comment I saw on this method is using a 6" speaker. The majority of hi-fi's have 6" woofers so by using a 6" speaker as your 'mic' it translates well in the real world. I don't know how true this is but the Yamaha SubKick is a 6" speaker a lot of people I have heard who have made...

    Bizarre Mixer Problem

I have my 3 mixers set up as followsin Cubase SX3.1: Mixer 1 - Everything hidden except Inputs and outputs. Mixer 2 - Everything hidden except Groups and FX Channels. Mixer 3 - Everything hidden except Individual Channels. For some bizarre reason Mixer 2 & 3 stay the same as I set them...

    drumagog sounding like a machine??

Yes this works but it's not how I like to work. We have a lovely sounding room here and I try to work from the overhead sound primarily with the spot mics just filling in. I spend a lot of time getting the overheads right and use my Schoeps mics and Focusrite Red Pre Amps to get the best sound I...

    drumagog sounding like a machine??

I use Drumagog quite a lot but always use samples taken from the kit I'm recording. I basically use it as the ultimate noise gate. I have tried in the past to use other samples but it never sounds right to me and never seem to gel with the overheads.
