I have one of the early 603s and a Russian MK012. They are very close in sound IMO on acou guit--both very nice. Can't speak for the newer 603s.
There are a lot more choices in SDCs nowdays, so I wouldn't know what to choose.
I agree that mic positioning is the best eq for acou guit. Skill...
No offense intended to Paul, but IMO the Mbox = waste of money. My advice is to buy something like a True P-Solo or a Grace 101. These are around $500 and pro quality. Buy a decent PCI interface like the M-Audio Audiophile $100. You can get inexpensive DAW software for around $50. You will...
Godin makes a lot of great guits in your price range. Canadian made, excellent quality. Lot of variety.

From there if you head west you'll find Buffalo Brothers guits in Carlsbad. Hundreds and hundreds of high-end new/used acoustics and a nice selection of new/used electrics. You could spend a day just in that store. I've used their 100% trade up policy five times in the last 10-15 yrs...
You may have to up your limit a little, but here are some contenders. I have the Sebatron and love it. The Sytek is very popular. The Seventh Circle stuff gets raves and you can mix and match different preamps.

Use your DAW plugins for EQ and compression until you can afford something better.
Are you sure about that? It is my understanding that this is a "gain range" switch to be used to adjust gain needed to amplify the incoming signal level from a mic or instrument (as the output from these devices varies). It is not a switch that converts the nominal output level (-10dB to +4dB)...
I am not familiar with the H4n, but if Ritchie recommends it, I believe it will perform exactly as he says it will. However, that is not the direction I would go.
I still feel PCI cards offer the best price/quality ratio for AD/DA interfaces. I would choose either the M-Audio Delta 44 or the...
