    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

my $0.02, as someone who only has experience with cheap gear... originally had an SP B1 (along with a half dozen other Chinese mics) and DMP3. sold the B1 and got an AT4040 and was wowed by the difference. much better, more defined, less harsh. i figured id upgrade the preamp too, so i...

    Groove tubes THE BRICK ????

I bought a Brick last year, and I actually didn't feel it was worth the upgrade over my DMP3 so I returned it. Upgrading my mic (AT4040 over a SP B1) made a much bigger difference than upgrading the preamp. I noticed little to no improvement of the Brick over the DMP3.

Song Recorded (Almost) Entirely With SPB1 and SPC1

Cool song. I think I downloaded one of your songs a while back, called "So Cold" or something...that was well recorded also.

Shure KSM27 vs. Audio Technica 4040

I have the AT4040, but I've heard good things about the KSM27 as well. I only went with the AT because I found a good deal on it.

Studio Projects VTB-1 over Presonus Bluetube?

I've had the VTB-1 for a few weeks and I think it's a good value. I haven't tried it as a DI yet, but the tube blend is pretty versatile for the mic pre. It sounds as clean as the DMP3 to my ears with the tube blend off, and when the tube blend is added in, it has sort of a...

    Slight hum/buzz from Brick

The audio doesn't seem to have any noise in it, both in the mic pre and the DI. I purchased it online so unfortunately I wouldn't be able to take it back for testing (plus there are no dealers near me). I sent an e-mail to GT, and they said they would forward it to their engineering.

    Slight hum/buzz from Brick

Hmm, turning it doesn't help. Seems to be coming from the back of the unit (where the power cord plugs in), and it sort of sounds like a fluorescent lamp.

    Slight hum/buzz from Brick

I just got a GT Brick today, my first tube preamp. When I switch it on I hear a slight electrical buzz coming from inside the unit. Is this normal? It seems to work fine otherwise (no noise in the signal). Thanks

    laptop battery won't recharge

It might be a software thing if the battery is fully charged but Windows is not displaying it properly. Happened to my Compaq once or twice. I think I shut Windows down (completely, not a restart) and when I turned it back on Windows displayed it correctly. Good luck.

Question about switching settings while condenser mic is plugged in

I was curious if doing any of the following will damage your pre-amp or condenser mic while the mic is plugged in: - Turning the pre-amp on/off while phantom power is set to 'on' - Switching the gain stage on the pre-amp while it is on - Switching the pad or low-cut filter on or off, either on...

    Headphones for mixing

I'm an apartment dweller too, and I had to sell my Yorkville monitors last year. What I do now is mix on my cheap AKG cans, which I also use for listening to music, and then burn it on a throwaway CD-R and take it to the car. I make a list of what changes I want and then go back and fiddle. I...

    Audio Technica AT4040

I just got mine today. I only got to try it for a few minutes but I love it. Compared to my SP B1 and MXL603S it's free of harsh sounding frequencies.
