    Slight hum/buzz from Brick

I just got a GT Brick today, my first tube preamp. When I switch it on I hear a slight electrical buzz coming from inside the unit. Is this normal? It seems to work fine otherwise (no noise in the signal). Thanks

Question about switching settings while condenser mic is plugged in

I was curious if doing any of the following will damage your pre-amp or condenser mic while the mic is plugged in: - Turning the pre-amp on/off while phantom power is set to 'on' - Switching the gain stage on the pre-amp while it is on - Switching the pad or low-cut filter on or off, either on...

    WDM-KS vs. ASIO

Is there a preference for one or the other? I had been using ASIO with my Audiophile 2496 but recently upgraded to SONAR 4, and the documentation suggested WDM-KS. Latency seems the same on both. Can anyone explain the differences? Thanks

Dumb question: safe to run effects pedals into DMP3?

I record bass guitar direct into the back of my DMP3. I was wondering if it would be OK to put an effects pedal (Ibanez SB7..envelope filter type effect) in front of the DMP3. Thx

    Monitoring with effects

Here are the specs of my setup: Biostar mini-PC with Via chipset Athlon XP1800+, 768MB PC2100, 80GB HDD, Audiophile 2496 It can handle all aspects of recording OK, except it chokes badly when I try to monitor live input with effects, particularly reverb. I could probably upgrade to a Barton...

Lavalier condenser mics (for acoustic guitar)

I sort of bought one on a whim tonight, an Audio-Technica with an attached power supply. It powers the mic via battery or phantom power, has XLR out, and has a bass roll-off. I got it used for about 1/2 new price, thinking I scored a bargain, even though the guitar clip was missing. Well, I...

    Recording bass straight to board

Hi, I had been using a J-Station to record bass but I sold it recently after getting a V-Amp Pro (probably a mistake). I've been recording it direct into my DMP3 but was wondering how to 'tighten' it up in a mix. It sounds kind of boomy and indistinct. Should I spring for a Bass V-Amp or...

    Newb question...MIDI, DXi's

Hi, I just 'upgraded' from using an audio-only multitracker (CEP) to Sonar 2.2. This is my first time using MIDI, I think. Basically I would like to add some synth sounds to my recordings (downloaded Triangle II). So I have my Evolution MK-249C connected, fire up Sonar, insert Triangle, and...

    Squier Telecaster Custom

Anyone played one? They're supposed to be released later in September but I read that some local stores have them. Looks effing sweet, especially if I could get a custom-made red pearloid pickguard on it :) The retail price is $199

    Price of SM57 up $10

I was looking for an SM57 and it appears it's now $89 everywhere. Thanks guys for driving up the price with your demand ;)

    Setting soundcard/amp output levels

Hi, I was wondering what would be the optimal way to set output levels for mixing? Right now I have my soundcard output set on max, and the volume on my Hafler TA1100 amp set to 3/10. I always figured this was the way, but on the Hafler manual it mentions turning up the source level to 2/3-3/4...

Looking for a cheap amp for Yorkville YSM-1i's

I saw an article where someone said a 1970-80's Sansui or Pioneer receiver would work. Just curious what people around here are using to power their YSMs. I was thinking about using my Onkyo receiver (that I use to watch movies on), but then it might not match with the rest of the speakers. I...

    Shockmounts a necessity?

Hi, I have a couple of oft-recommended condensers (SP B1 and Marshall V67G) and I got my first real chance to use them last weekend. So far I'm just using the clips that came with them, but was thinking about getting shockmounts (frankly just because it seemed like everyone else uses them)...
