Tascam 688 PLAY speed is fast while FF RR is slow

After researching im pretty sure i have a capstan servo issue. Play is too fast and after putting in a new capstan motor didnt fix it. After looking around the tape unit, i dont see a servo board unless its integrated into one of the other PCBs.

Tascam 688 PLAY speed is fast while FF RR is slow

The capstan belt is good. I fixed it a year ago and the capstan works great. The rubber tire roller does fine as its supposed to. The pinch roller never had a problem either.

Tascam 688 PLAY speed is fast while FF RR is slow

I changed the transfer motor (take up reel motor is what i also hear it called). Its the one in this pick. I thought maybe the yellow and orange wire that powers it was the problem but it still had the same issue.

Tascam 688 PLAY speed is fast while FF RR is slow

Hi everybody I have a 688 that works great after I switched out the transport motor, but for some reason, it has switched the FF and RE speed with the PLAY speed. PLAY is as fast as FF and RR is supposed to be. Im not sure when the switch happened but Im now stuck and cannot use it until the...

    Going DAW-less

I mostly repair cassette, DAT, ADAT and some of the newer stuff if it hasn't been fried by some sort of overcurrent. There is a lot of legacy gear from the 90s that I come across. I have little experience in reel-to-reel but Ive heard its a bit more straight forward than the newer stuff.

Its a great option if you know how to clean the cassette deck, which is not hard at all. The 88s have more parts available to buy and some have less than 400 hours on the drum head. The tapes are still available too.

It becomes a good side-hustle too. I can fix some throw-away gear and sell it on Ebay for a few extra dollars and have money for any of the big purchases I want.

    Going DAW-less

Its price, the lack of channels, and its new equipment. Plus, Im looking into getting a really good vintage mixer with aux busses and grouping. The 24 is BY FAR the best option for the DAW-less who would like new gear but I guess i just like the old stuff and as far as portastudios go, I have a...

Lol yeah thats what Tascam called their first home studio unit.

    Going DAW-less

Im loving all the responses so far. The DAW-less topic is a new one and it causes the legacy guys to scratch their heads and wonder why some guys would go backwards. My reasonings come mostly from living in a "musical winter". Basically, new music sucks and needs a new place and approach to get...

    Going DAW-less

The 24 is great but expensive for now. Plus, its more of a portastudio.

    Going DAW-less

That's right. I'm no longer a computer fan and that thought gets more exciting every minute. For most guys who talk about going "DAW-less", they cant seem to put into words why they just dont have any excitement for their fully built computer recording rig and Im hearing more about it every day...
