At this time the dollar is very low for us Europeans. So buying gear in the US could really make a bargain. But I hesitate to buy a bass online. I can play similar guitars in my shop nextdoor and figure out if it sounds and feels good, but still ... What would you do?

I always play bass with compression on. But for recording bass, it is best to play as dry as possible (without effects). Is this also the case for compression? Should I record a compressed bass or should I aply the compression after the recording? Any suggestions?
