I'm not sure if you still post on this site anymore, but perhaps this message will find you somehow--were you ever able to repair the play issue you experienced with your Tascam Portastudio 488? I'm experiencing the exact same problem where it can rewind/ff without issue, but the tape doesn't want to engage playing or recording. If you were able to fix the recorder, I'd be extremely grateful to know what you identified as the problem and how you fixed it.
