Exactly. Most people in this thread seem to be answering the question they wanted him to ask: "Should I go digital?" Presumably because they want that answer to be YES ... no idea why that is the case in the Analog forum, but the world is what it is today.
Also no seed needs to be planted to...
The context is wondering if the "tape sound" of a cassette 4-track can be obtained using digital + mixer. That answer is no.
But my point about the mixer is "tape + mixer" is indeed "a sound" (very many different sounds) that many people are referring to when they think "analog". Thinking you...
Guys. He’s not asking “should I got use digital or tape?”, he’s asking if the digital recorder + mixer will give a similar analog sound as tape machine + mixer. The answer is no it will not. It might give a sound you like, but not the tape sound.
As yes, mixers have a sound too, and certainly...
Planning to buy back my original Scully 280 4-track I had 12 years ago, yep. That was my all-time favorite multi-track machine … I’ve had a few other 280s but none of them sounded like that particular one (an early one I believe).

Yeh I’m happy to pay a premium for a working deck … unfortunately none of them on Reverb are functional. Looking for a tech to mail one off to; in that event I would just grab the best one on Reverb.
Of course anyone can post whatever opinions they wish, again ... but: what is the purpose of posting this here? What "open debate" are you looking to have, and with whom? I trust you will find 95%+ agreement with your views in literally every part of every audio form across the entire internet...
You’re free to post whatever you want, however you should expect some impassioned responses, considering the audience you are posting to.
Why is there such a focus on “measurable” quality? Quality is in the results. Which is subjective.
It’s odd to say the negatives are never spoken about...
1. I do not use tape as an “effect”. It’s a recording medium which sounds very different from digital.
2. Of course I want decks to perform as well as they can, and of course I like them calibrated. You can calibrate your deck however you want … different tape types behave differently on...
