    Here we go again

Hey P'Ill. Man you need to listen to the guys on this site who have been doing this a while. You obviously put a lot of effort into this - which is great to hear - and the new mic sounds a lot better but your flow drags the track, you sound like you're reading someone else's words, you know...

    Roland SP404

Thanks for the pointer! It looks pretty good but are there any other products out there like it? Makes sense to check them out too...

    Roland SP404

Anyone used a Roland SP404? I've been thinking of getting one and I wondered if anyone had any compact flash problems or has any words about what it's like to use. Just love the idea that it runs on batteries and being able to play about while travelling!

    Noise Cancelling

Get some in-ear monitors and then put some industrial ear-defenders over the top.

    In what order...

I normally try and get some thoughts down about the melody first. That way i know how the beat should drive it. Other times I get an idea for a rhythm and just loop it to give me something to try melodies out to. Then, when I've got that going, I record the melody and fill out the beat for it as...

is there anyone here who DOESN'T use ANY HARDWARE 'BEAT MACHINE' at all to compose??

Yeah, I always think that's funny! What about pianists? Does Bethovan sound too much like Mozart because he has the same sounds on his piano? Same with guitar - does Hendrix sound like Slash? If you're good you can come up with something new and fresh!

Cheap, decent cymbals for a non-drummer?

Go B8 if you want something cheap. They sound pretty good for what they are and last forever.

    Stupid Question

It depends as well on what kind of music you want to make. Will you want to chop up the different drum parts? If so you have to go for the multi-track approach.

    piccolo snare?

Very few people play with just a piccolo. Usually it's a second snare just used to give a different snare sound if you want 2 snares in the song, or for the odd song if the sound fits better - perhaps a full bodied snare sound is too much with what else is going on in the song for instance. If...

    What is better?!

All in all I prefer accoustic drums but I get on with elec's. I have elec in my flat since I can't have an accoustic kit there - much as I'd like to - but I get to play accoustic at least an hour every week so it's not too bad. Elec's are also great for practice of different styles - I can have...

    Soundproofing

I always use light sticks like 7As in church and I try to stay controlled - that way I'm not too loud for even the smaller church I play in. Hot-rods are quiet but they don't sound as good as sticks. You can practice control by playing a fast exercise as it feels comfortable and then trying to...

Loud for you or the congregation? You do wear ear plugs right?

    Like the Album or Not?

Kind of, going to see a band live is about hearing the music you like but it's also about hearing something slightly different than what was recorded to CD. I'd feel cheated if I went to see a band and they just played straight through their last album and went off. There needs to be some...

    Like the Album or Not?

It is hard to separate the solo from the song - or it should be - without changing the song you're trying to cover so I think they should be played as on the album but perhaps with a little rearrangement to individualise it a bit. People who just play a totally different solo they've made up...
