Old reel to reel recordings versus cassette recordings

LOL. His name isn't Grumpy Mod. It's gecko zzed. Member names are in blue. ;) Also, welcome.

    Metal mixing

I have to agree with Yves A. I'll go further to add you need more overheads. The cymbals are getting lost. Also, try cutting some more lows from the guitars. I would low shelf everything below around 250 hz about -3 db. Gives the bass more room to be bass while giving the guitars more...

black/death metal (ala Behemoth) mixing feedback needed

The drumkit is a bit out of balance. It is dominated by the snare. I'd like to hear more kick and overheads. The kick drum has the click but is missing the thump.

    Almost A Shame (NSFW)

I threw this together a pretty good while ago but, after updating my monitoring setup, gave it a proper (ish) remaster. Mostly a bit of fun, but critique is always welcome. Also, no offense in advance. ;) Almost A Shame (Remastered 2019) by GORE | Free Listening on SoundCloud

    Static In My Signal Chain

Just wrap it in tin foil and you'll be fine.

    Soundcard Advice

To further alleviate some concerns over Preamp quality (mainly noise floor), this guy tested a handful of pres in different interfaces. It may surprise some people that the Midas pres on the Behringer actually perform slightly better than the Focusrite. ;) (though the difference is negligible)...

    Soundcard Advice

I own a Berhinger UMC204HD as well and have been using it for about 3 years. It has been virtually trouble free and has more features for the money than anything else out there. The pres are transparent and damn near noiseless. The drivers are nothing fancy but very stable. The monitoring...

    Help with kick drum

Compression. Sounds like you need it. (on more than the drums). For rock and metal kicks, I'd gate until the kicks are isolated. Compression with a hard knee, about 15-30ms attack, 25-40ms release, a 4:1 ratio, and adjust the threshold until you bring out a nice transient peak. Then, about a 3db...

Should you master a song if you only plan to release it as a single?

Broken down to it's basic message, this quote is essentially "mastering is mastering". :D And, no, that's not mastering. The definition is actually quite simple. Mastering is preparing material for a destination medium. It's not the "what" that's complex and nuanced, it's the "how".

Gutar impuse responses fizzing on small, cheap speakers

Maybe the small speakers/earbuds just suck. ;) How do other isolated guitar tracks not recorded by yourself sound on these speakers/earbuds? How about dropping a sample and letting us have a listen?

Going for a 70's Country Vibe

As others have said, there's a lack of bass. Not necessarily low end in general, but bass as in instrumentation. The rest of the tones work well for the song. I would suggest layering some vocals harmonies/backing vocals in the bridge, I'm thinking the first three lines with the last two solo...

    Hit Shitter - Metal-ish (80's)?

    Low end - it's a love/hate relationship for most of us. ;)

Disaffected Alt Rock Bass Girl - Completely different version

"Disaffected Alt Rock Bass Girl, Holding down the E...." Did I hear that right? lol That's brilliant. What a fun song. Like others have said, bass is boomy. The girl's voice is buttery.

    Hit Shitter - Metal-ish (80's)?

My main nitpick is the intro. At 10 seconds in, when the accompaniment comes in it sounds a tad muddy. I think this is due to the bass coming in with the rhythm guitars. I would either lose the bass until the drums kick in or I would have had a kick/cymbal crash at the 'one' of each measure...

    Synthwave rock epic

Mix wise; overall good balance. Maybe a slightly brittle high end at times but, this being quite synth laden, it could be artistic choice. My ears didn't struggle hard to pick out anything. I second the thought that the vocals could benefit from some light de-essing. Mostly during layered parts...
