They will pop up every now and then on ebay, but are kind of hard to find. Just a disclaimer: they are very difficult to service. You need to find a technician who has worked on them before. From what I understand, the machine is controlled by a computer and everything is somewhat synced up to...
I know you said no parametric, but the Ashly PQX-572 is a really amazing EQ for the money. On top of 5 parametric bands, it has a low and high shelf. Huge range of EQ with an extremely transparent sound. At the price, I think it's hard to disregard it just because it's parametric :)
Oh, I could totally see it sounding a little "sterile" with a digital setup. Quite honestly, before I had the Ghost + MS-16, I was using a TASCAM M312b + TASCAM 34b. That was a dirty sound! I loved that setup but it wasn't that versatile... real murky sounding (exactly what I was looking for...
I say try and find a Soundcraft Ghost 24 (or 32). It's what I use with my MS-16 and I love it. Everything you could want in a studio desk for the price (if you can find one). More routing options than I can use (8 buss, direct outs on every channel, 2 inputs per channel, multiple stereo outs...
My two cents... These are AMAZING! I purchased an RE-201 a while ago, and it's my favorite effects unit by far. You can use it on almost anything. I always have a tough time describing exactly why I like it so much, but the tape delay and spring reverb in tandem out of an actual Space Echo is...
Just because I've been wondering... On all my previous machines, I would lower the take up reel to stop the capstan when I wasn't recording and leave the machine on all day. However, I upgraded to an MS-16 and the capstan is always running. Does anybody know if TASCAM anticipated people...
+1 to the Ghost. I've used the older TASCAM boards (m-300 and m-500 series) too, and love them. The Ghost is +4 (and can be -10 if you want it to be), and is just crazy versatile in general. It also has 2 bands of fully parametric EQ on each channel - which sound great - very musical and very...
I will offer a counter-point to the no compression ideology (which is completely valid)... I started without using compression on my recordings. When I finally got a VLA II, I was blown away. Ever since then, I've recorded with compression on the majority of my mixes - whether it be on a...
Once the basics are covered (388, or multitrack recorder + mixer and then mixdown deck/computer/direct to CD burner, etc.), I would highly recommend looking into a quality pair of monitor speakers. You can use computer speakers, hi-fi speakers/whatever, but a (close to) unbiased pair of...
I just want to say, this thread is making me feel like I've been ripped off this whole time! I've been using RMGI SM911 almost exclusively for about 4 or 5 years, and I feel like I've missed the entire NOS train. I do see the prices have jumped up recently (which is a huge bummer), but I've...
Thanks for the replies! I did see your thread about fixing it using other Tascam adapters, but I saw a pair of 85-16 hubs on ebay and thought I would make sure. I'll have to weigh my options and see what happens.
Hey again everybody. One of the reel hold-downs/hub adapters on the MS-16 I just picked up is close to breaking (it works for transport, but it is pretty loose). Does anyone know if the metal hub adapters for the 85-16 will work with the MS-16? The manual for the MS-16 says the optional...
