Nevermind the optimal resolution... just try changing it to something smaller while Cubase is running, like 800x600 and quit Cubase. Then return to native resolution, start up Cubase and see if it helped.

What exactly happens when you click on the "e" button? Maybe Cubase does open the channel window (what you call graphical equalization window) but it is out of the view of your monitor. It can happen sometimes. If that is the case, try changing resolution on your monitor to different settings...
