    correct grade of tape???

does it matter which grade of tape you use (456,499,GP9 etc) on your tape machine? I have a Fostex A8 and when i bought the machine, the tape it had was some reels of Ampex 456 and one reel of 406. I recently bought a reel of 499, will this work well on my machine or would it be best to stick...

    reel to reel arms.

i've only noticed them moving when i've been rewinding or fast forwarding tape, but i'd say yeah, they are supposed to move. i guess, they're just keeping the tension of the tape correct....

    Overhead(s)

just to add a little to ambient-micing of drums argument. at the minute (mainly due to the lack of having two mics of the same model etc), i'm using just one, yes, you read it right, microphone to record my three piece drum kit. it's a AKG C1000s and i place it about a foot in front of the...

Kick Drum mics (D112 vs. ATM25)

Yeah, less dampening material in the bass drum will help. If i ever use dampening (which i hardly do), it's usually a small pillow placed just in front of batter head (not actually touching it). As you have a rhythm traveller kit, which has a small bass drum (20" right?), why don't you buy a...

    16 track reel to reels..

agreed, the Fostex A8 is a great piece of kit. only complaint is that it only has four inputs, making live band recording a little tricky, but a bit of creativity with my recording technique can get around that problem with ease...

    16 track reel to reels..

ermmmmm... TIM: Yeah, but you're talking about a STUDER machine. I've seen Studer 2 tracks that wre going for about $10 Grand! We're talking about what are really "Semi-Pro" Machines. A new Studer 2"-24 track Machine is probably close to $100,000.00 bucks!(Or More-I bnever bothered to price...

    16 track reel to reels..

Steve Albini Well, according to the insert of the Uranus 7" single by Shellac (the absolutely awesome band that albini plays in), it's a Studer A-80VU Mk.2 (with Mk. 3 upgrade) 2" 24 track. hope this helps.

    16 track reel to reels..

Previous Post: And are these the units that pro studios use...cause I know a lot of recording studios still use reel to reel (for example, Steve Albini does), Steve Albini's studio uses a 24 track Studer machine which takes 2" tape. Studer still manufacture reel to reel machines. Just to...

    newbie pursuing recording

i suppose it depends on what program you are using on your computer to record with. i'd say record the band live (mic up the guitar amps and drums, DI the bass) and then overdub the vocals afterwards. experiment and have fun!

recording drums with ONLY two mics - but which ones????

the reason i'm asking about using only two mics is that i'm on a limited budget and i would rather get two decent mics that i could use for a variety of purposes, (NT1 for vocals as well a as drum overhead - i guess the Oktava MC-012 would be even more multi-purpose by swapping capsules)...

recording drums with ONLY two mics - but which ones????

budget would be preferably no more than £300 GBP ($480(US)) for the two mics. your suggestion of an Oktava MC-012 and Audio Technica ATM25 sounds a good one though. any more suggestions out there?
