Why record with a computer when there are all-in-one portastudios?

I've been doing this since 4 track cassette days. I moved up to an Akai DPS16 recorder and later to PC. I prefer the PC for all the same reasons being mentioned here. I now use Superior Drummer for my drum tracks so I doubt I would ever go back to a standalone recorder. But honestly, outside of...

4-track brainteaser! Can you figure it out??

Well, that's what I meant. If it's an instrument that runs continuously through the entire song, you have to re-do that instrument completely. I did that a few times. If it's a part with pauses you have to be nimble with punching in and out. I agree it's irritating to think you're recording but...

4-track brainteaser! Can you figure it out??

You know what hurt most when working with tape? Erasing a good take. It didn't happen often but even a handful of times was too much for me.

4-track brainteaser! Can you figure it out??

I don't have a solution for you but it sure reminds me of my old days doing home recording. I was so elated to go digital and away from jumping the hoops that you're doing here. The difference for me was that I was working with a drum machine and I was the only musician. The other difference for...

    Samson Zoom H2n Experience?

I have the Zoom H2, not the H2n. Same product with some minor differences. I use it a lot as a notepad for songwriting ideas. I've also used it at meetings for transcription purposes. I've recorded rehearsals and live gigs. It's great at fulfilling all of these roles. In a pinch you can use it...

    Netbook with Reaper

There are a few threads on the Reaper forums about using it on a netbook. The short answer is yes the netbook should be fine, especially if you're just mastering. I assume (perhaps wrongly) that you have a working USB interface and that there are no hiccups between it and your netbook.

    EZDrummer

My suggestion would be to get Superior Drummer, EZ Drummer's "bigger brother". EZ Drummer's sounds are preprocessed to make them quickly fit into a mix whereas Superior Drummer gives you raw samples and the ability to process/control the sounds more. It sounds like you are looking for greater...

Are most modern laptops useable as a DAW,

The laptop/usb interface world seems to be hit or miss from what I can tell. Some people have no problems and others have issues galore. My strategy was just to pick a good laptop first and cross my fingers that I'd find an interface that worked. From my research, Asus and Toshiba seemed to get...

    Audiogram 6 or US-122MKII?

My understanding is that USB 2.0 is most beneficial if you're recording multiple tracks at once (eg. recording a full band). If you're just recording a single source at any given time, USB 1 is fine. But yes, the Audiogram is only 16 bit so the Tascam is better if everything else is equal. Good...

    Audiogram 6 or US-122MKII?

I would cast a much wider net in terms of products. I would definitely add products from M-Audio, Cakewalk, E-mu, etc to your list - whatever your budget can handle. Read the reviews for each product. The world of USB interfaces can be a bit of a gamble and you may have to work at finding the...

Which audiointerface for 64 bit win7?

Check this. It's probably a little out of date so there may be some on this list that are indicated as not working but do in fact work.

Question about M-audio Fast Track Pro

No, I use Addictive Drums. I play guitar (and sing), and I'm playing with a Sansamp GT2, no amp. I'm not a turn-it-up-to-11 volume nut, I record alternative power pop style music. The Fast Track Pro's headphone output is not loud enough for almost any application I use it for. It's impossible to...

Question about M-audio Fast Track Pro

The preamps are weak. Get a dedicated preamp. I have an m-audio DMP3 and a Studio Projects VTB1, each of which are ok for that job. More of a headache to me is that the headphone jack on the Fast Track Pro is woefully inadequate. Not only do I need a separate preamp but I also have a small...

Tascam Cassette 4-track Appreciation Thread...Vote For Your Favorite!

The Porta One is the only one I have experience with and it was decent. I've also used a Fostex 160, which was good: And also a Yamaha M3TX, which I still have: But I'm all digital now...and yet seeing the pictures in the first post still makes me drool even though I would probably never...

Prob with ASIO and M-Audio 2496

A basic question: have you installed the correct drivers for your 2496? You can't rely on the disc that came with the card - go to m-audio's site and download/install the correct driver for your OS if you haven't done so already.
