"Does the MXL 990 ribbon mic use one of the three types of Chinese ribbon motors I describe in this article?"
No, it doesn't. The ribbon itself is about the same size as the Apex 205 type but the motor assembly is rectangular and doesn't extend beyond the ribbon clamps at the top and bottom...
UPS just brought me one of these. Amazon is selling them for $84.96 including shipping (the order is filled by Musician's Friend.) MF was selling them for $99.99 again last time I looked.
Just gave it a quick "test test" to make sure it survived shipping. It sounded *very* nice. The side nulls...
I picked up a couple of these the last time MF had them at $30 because I'd pay $30 for the case, connectors, meter and power supply to use for DIY. I've been using one for a bass DI and it works great if you set it up to just kiss the limiter a bit. If you hit the limiter too hard it's not a...
I recently started using a couple Apex 205 ribbons as a Blumlein pair out front, up about six feet, and angled down at the set instead of condensers in x-y over the set. I like it a lot. If I need more sizzle I can dial it in with EQ without things getting harsh and the imaging of the whole set...
Get an sm58, sm57, or both. They're indestructable, useful for lots of stuff and you can always get a good price on eBay if you eventually decide you don't like them.
I love my old TC Native EQ plugin. It's a "paragraphic". It's laid out like a graphic and works like one with the default settings, but you can change the freq., Q, and gain/boost on all the bands. Real easy to use.
I've used both the INA2017 and the INA103. I just used the circuits in the app notes and both work just fine. The only thing to watch out for is that the "suggested" input network (47ohm resistor and 1.2uH inductor in parallel on both inputs) is more like "mandatory"; cable capacitance is enough...
What a cool website! (OK, it's mine.)
That circuit should work fine with a 9V zener instead of a 12V one. Might want to raise the 100kOhm resistors up to 130kOhm, though.
Contact the manufacturer and they'll sell you 100 for $70 each. You'll be seeing a lot of these.
