I see that you're in Costa Rica! Next time you need to track drums, let me know, I have pretty decent mics, preamps (API) and compressors and probably charge cheaper than what you payed for tracking those drums! Pura vida!
The kick drum sounds pretty lousy, but not something that you can't work with. I would compress it with a slow attack, fast release (1176), cut around 500Hz with a fat bell Q, boost a little around 4.5K and do a LPF at around 5K to get rid of some of the bleed from the cymbals and try and work...
I've used the same set of nearfields for a few years; Roland DS-90A and they do the trick for me. Among other things, I've been recording a really great album lately and my friend/client had a pair of M-Audio BX8a's. He brought them to the studio so that he could hear the mixes in the same...
I had used the free Antress plugin that emulated the LA2A and one day I had to reinstall everything in my computer and lost that plugin. I had used it to pump my bass and kick sounds but later opted for other compressors so I didn´t miss the plugin.
Yesterday, a good friend who owns a very well...
Generally mixes that sound good at low volume will sound good at higher volumes but that doesn't necesarily work the other way around. I tend to mix at low volumes and then listen back at higher volumes.
I ALWAYS pan the drums as if I was "looking" at the kit. Hats are panned hard right, Floor tom panned hard left. Many recording/mixing engineers pan from the drummers perspective, many pan from the audience perspective, no RIGHT WRONG there, just a matter of taste
I agree with John, the DMP3 is a pretty decent preamp; great price quality. For a little less $$$ than the DMP3 you can get the TUBEpre from Presonus and IMHO is a pretty decent preamp as well.
I record the bottom of the snare, phase reversed, sometimes with an sm57, sometimes with an MD421. I never use the bottom track. I record the top of the snare with an sm57 about 1/2" above the edge of the rim pointing towards the center of the snare, always tend to boost highs and add lots of...
