The fx in the fx bin doesn't get printed - so shouldn't be any worries. I've got no opinion if you should use the fx in the patchmix inline. They're pretty cool, as is the PowerFX-gadget.
I'ts a good bet you'll get sound if you press the input echo button. But careful so it's not to loud when...
Sonar LE is supposed to be one of the more powerful oem's so I think you'll be happy for a while.
There's probably something wrong in your monitoring chain. There's a few ways to monitor you signal. You might want to check input monitoring in the Sonar helpfile especially the part with Input...
I think this will explain it.

I upgraded from S4SE to S5PE in July fully aware that it likely was a stupid thing to do - but I really needed some of the stuff and it was a good deal as such. But then the kind people at Cakewalk offered us...

And this is the most active Variax-community I've found...
Basically I agree with everything you said Phildo. Had my Variax for over a year and it's been my workhorse in the studio. Convincing enough for me and it's so nice to be hum and noise-free...
Never heard about latency-problems with Variax, and I don't notice any (and I DO notice it when I play...
Like I said, Posihfopit. Also the previously mentioned Paris. Other good freebees are Kjaerhus classic at http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-eq.php and the NyqvistEQ at http://magnus.smartelectronix.com/ (should point out that NyqvistEQ is donationware)
