Outboard Preamp with a USB Audio Interface

If it has a line in, you're bypassing the preamp.

    EQing a live recording...hiss

Well, Mudd is usually in the lower mids. Between 150 and 300. Try cutting there. Presence is between 3 and 5 k, depending what you've recorded. The hiss is above 8 k. I would never boost there.

    Please suggest some mics

It doesn't really matter what mic you get if you're using the pres on your soundblaster. If indeed it actually has mic pres If I were you, I'd get a new sound card, Something like an M-Audio Audiophile, a FMR-RNP, and a SM57. Just my two cents.

Here's A Little Snow Induced Music Clip......

This is really cool but to me the drum samples are more of a rock and roll style set than a jazz. I think this use not such a punchy kick drum. The kick seems to be taking allot of sonic space. I can't hear the cool bass lines. Guitar sounds nice as does the rest of the instruments. Neat...

    Roll With The Punches...

NIce job. Great song. I'd boost the snare a bit, and try to eq some of the 'gongyness' out of the cymbal tracks. Other than that, It's almost there.

    Same song, Two Versions

I did two versions of the same song. One is a more acoustic country style and the other is a rock version. Give a listen, let me know what you think. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/3/lincolnhighwaymusic.htm Song is Angry Inside. Both are recorded using: M-Audio Delta 1010 into Sonar 3.1.1...

    I need some help EQ'ing an Sm58 in Post (Mackie 1202, EQ-flat & perfomance 4'' away)

That's the kind of stuff that needs to be taken care of in tracking. A pop filter would be the first thing.

    Public Mix Contest #5

    need a lil feedback

Sounds awesome. I'm not sure if the vocals need to be brought up, or just a bit less reverb. No, the more I listen, they need to be brought up. This song has an old school Metallica feel to it. I love the drums. They're live drums, right? If not, I WANT THOSE SAMPLES. That is the best half...

    Surrogate

Pretty cool. Great song. Really good performance. The drums sound good. Love the kick and snare. The drums seem a bit wishy/washy for me for this type of song. Maybe try to spank them hard (knee) with some compression. Vox are ok. A bit burried, but I think fixing the guitars will bring...

    tell me what you think

Not bad for a first time. There are timing issues between the drums and the bass/guitars. The mix itself needs some dynamics. There isn't much punch, and the high end is sort of subdued. Try some EQ on the cymbal tracks, and some EQ/Compression on the kick and bass tracks. Guitars don't sound...

    Mixing skills

I liked the mix till the dirt guitars came in. They're real sterile sounding. I'd bet a POD or Amplitube or something like that. Drums and bass sound cool. Mix is real clean. Vox could be brought out more, though since the singer has a real strong voice.

    first time mixing...

Not bad at all. The mix is pretty clean, it just seems to lack any dynamics. The vocals could also be out in front a bit more. Learning new monitors is a pain. I like the guitar interlude. That was real nice. I think it needs a bit more balance, though. This would be much better, as would...
