On alot of belt packs there is a pad switch that will cut the signal -10 dB or so...I don't know if you've checked for that, and I doubt there is one on your handheld. Actually, I think looking at the manual that there is a gain adjustment on the receiver...if this is the right manual...

They only time I do not use one is doing scratch tracks for ideas. Anytime I want to do anything with a final written version, even acoustic versions, I use one. It just makes everything more cohesive for me. Especially because I usually record acoustic and vocals separately.

A few reviews I saw did say the converters on the M-Audio weren't the best. Can you bypass the preamp on it? If not then I would definitely get a different soundcard first. If you are planning on getting some really nice pres in the future then I would find a card that is just some really nice...
