    Low synth output

Yes I have that marking too. And that's the plan. Do I aim to get everything up to that 0 level to ensure strong signal, even quiet instruments, then lower it in the DAW? And at this point I am using my interface for both headphones and output to monitors, so recording via pre-fade leaves...

    Low synth output

The ZED14 has 4 Aux outs. I have a balanced cable from the Aux 1/2 outs to inputs 1/2 of my Focusrite Saffire which only has 2 inputs. Aux 1/2 are pre-fader so as far as I know it's only the channel and master Aux 1/2 levels (after channel gain) that are controlling interface input level. The...

    Low synth output

Continuing! So I am now using the ZED14 which now has 5 synths going in via both mono and stereo inputs with a balanced cable from the Aux 1/2 out to the interface. I'm gain staging from synth to mixer to interface to DAW as follows. - set synth to almost max volume - engage PFL switch -...

    Low synth output

When the cats away the (gear mice) will play. So.. I had a ZED14 sitting unused in my attic (long story) and someone on gearslutz told me that unit had gain knobs on mono AND stereo channels. So I hooked it up right next to the Mackie and did a side by side: the same synth voice at max volume...

    Low synth output

I'm only doing mixer input tests right now not recording. I'm testing a Motif flute voice into a stereo channel and it's not even hitting -20db. That said I don't hear much noise over headphones. I'm reading some other threads about adding gain via voice and global setting for this synth...

    Low synth output

oops I think I needed to quote to respond directly to you. So... it's a 1202 VLZ3 so the main outs and Alt 3/4's are balanced. I can get plenty of signal to the audio interface with either output, I am concerned here with weak signals coming into the mixer which might introduce noise.

These are line level synth inputs not mic.

    Low synth output

I'm running Reaper with this setup: 7 synths go into a Mackie mixer and I use the Alt 3/4 button to send one synth channel at a time to my Focusrite interface. My mono synths go into the mixer mic /line channels which have gain knobs so I can get a solid signal centering on 0 on my levels...

    X2 Producer won't record 24-bit

2nd Focusrite Call The first Focusrite support guy was wrong. I clicked on my ASIO panel in Bandcamp Cakewalk (i have to stop calling it Sonar) and realized there were 2 sample rate options, 44 and 48K. Mine had been set at 48K which caused Cakewalk to throw up an error when I set it to...

    X2 Producer won't record 24-bit

solved. Focusrite has informed me that this interface only records at 24-bit / 48K.

    X2 Producer won't record 24-bit

I dumped Sonar X2 for the free Bandcamp version of Cakewalk. Much cleaner interface! Now I can record at 24-bits but the ASIO driver requires a 48K sample rate for some reason. Using WDM I can record at 44K. Not sure why, or whether one is better than the other.

FocusRite vs Mixer Sound Quality Difference

I'm a hobbyist and have always been MIDI based. I record MIDI and listen to playback on 5 hardware synths plugged into Mackie stereo line inputs. And I bed wet (just kidding ha). So I have always heard the music via Mackie headphone jack or Mackie outputs to an amp driving speakers. I've...

FocusRite vs Mixer Sound Quality Difference

So yes the wav recorded using the Mackie main outs has more color. It's not as perfect as the direct to Mackie sound but close. Can you recommend any "expensive 'colored' preamps for our interfaces"? I'm somewhat new to audio recording but can't see using the mixer for that reason.

FocusRite vs Mixer Sound Quality Difference

yes, but i sent the signal via the Alt 3/4 rear outs, i''m going to repeat that test using the main outs now. Hopefully I will capture "Mackie color" as you suggest. Not sure how the Alt outs differ from Main outs. I build effects into my synth voices, once I get one right I'm not going to be...
