What Reference Songs Do You Use?

I usually pick one based on a sound I'm trying to get. For the record I'm working on now I'm using Chickenfoot songs. Clear, with a BIG ROCK sound.

deciding between two mics for 'one mic drum recording'

I'm looking at the Rode NT1A or Audio Technica AT 4033. I've used Apex mics for recording acoustic drums, but I do like the test I did with recoding only with a friends AT 2050 for certain song styles. I would probably use the mic mostly for drums, but I'd probably use it for VOX as well. Both...

Do you use a pick when recording acoustic strumming

I usually record 2 tracks (pickup and mic'd) with and without a pick so I have 4 tracks to muck around with.

    feedback on new track

yeah, that's a guitar. he double tracked the same part and I have them hard-panned. Agree on the VOX, I bumped them .5db and also took some of the stank off the overheads as they seemed to overpower the rest of the song.

    feedback on new track

Thanks! It's the first time I've recorded at home with real drums. The last 2 records I used my Strike Pro kit.

Lost Dream - spacey rock trip

very cool. I use THU Overloud (amp sim) and they have some similar pedals. I'm not a guitar player so finding good tone for me is likely fumbling around in the dark...thanks for the pic!

    Overhauling home recording gear

For DAW, Presonus Studio One or Ableton Live could be good options. Some interfaces come with free versions which are probably good enough. I'd consider the Gen 3 Focusrite interfaces as the preamps are very nice, and the price is reasonable. I wouldn't imagine you'd need more than 4 inputs...

    HELP! New Setup

The most important thing (in my opinion) is using editing software that supports multi-cam. It'll make editing soooooo much easier. This is a snap in Final Cut Pro X. I did this for a music video I produced and FCP X is really good at automatically syncing the multi-cam clips, plus switching...

Tips for pianists wanting to record?

I just started recoding acoustic drums at home, and the best way to know is to mic that sumbitch up and see what happens. I've recorded our digital piano by mic'ing the speaker just to see how it sounds. Answer: not as good as hooking it up through USB and recording directly... As for the link...

    renting a mic for vox?

I have been recording our vocals with a Blue Songbird and Audio Technica AT 2050 that I own, and plan to rent something for our next EP just to see if it's better. The music place near me rents out Neumann, Rode, Apex, AKG, AT etc for anywhere from $50 to $250/month. I'm not convinced a $4,000...

    Need some help and advice

In the top-left of logic, you can click the 'inspector' and modify the gain of the pre-recorded track to match the 'level' I would only use effects on what you are recording, not the pre-recorded track. Then I would put a compressor (pick 'compressor tools' in the preset dropdown and...

    garageband general

GB doesn't have the ability to do cross-fades so if you do have to splice stuff, zoom in as far as you can and split where there is no signal. If a 'pop' is really noticeable you'll have to use automation to mute/un-mute, or dip the volume which is a HUGE pain. Logic Pro X is well worth the $399...

How did you develop as a songwriter ?

As embarrassing as it sounds now, writing love songs for girlfriends in highschool is what got me started. 80's ballads FTW. Guitar lessons is what really de-mystified if for me. I'm a drummer, but I produce and do a lot of our bands guitar work on our recordings so that's why I started taking...
