this song began as an instrumental called 'redwood road'....
morphed into something else.

the drum track also includes a synth bass track, that i added a regular electric bass track on top of....
drums were built around Sony Acid loops...
guitars are a combination of mesa boogie amp into a demeter isolation cabinet, and direct via a Palmer PDI-09.

guitars:
i used my '77 Ibanez Artist 2618 for the crunchy left/right rhythms,
and a custom Williams strat build for the clean parts and the solo lines.

hm....

i clicked the link as it is,
and it brings the soundcloud player up immediately, and starts playing...

what am i missing?

the download sounds WAY better than that soundcloud streaming,
which is pretty poor IMHO

i wonder if there is a better way than just popping the soundcloud player in the post.......?
seems to be the norm....

I prefer not-soundcloud options anyway.
Downloads are nice if I really like a song and want to hang onto it. Plus, I just don't much like soundcloud itself.
So thanks for the direct download, Gonzo!

Anyway...

I like the interplay of voices and instruments right at the beginning.

I think the drums could probably come up and possibly be dryer. They're pretty quiet and distant now.

the lyric, it's about letting go of someone dear.
i'm thinking it might resonate with someone...

Angel

rise like a champion,
shine like a star
reach out and grab me,
tell me where you really are.

Angel
in my head now
Angel
I was told how
Angel
If you believe it
Angel
you can see it
Angel
I was searching
Angel
but I could not
Angel
….reach the other side.

When you crossover,
do not forget that i'm here.
I will reach out to you,
I hope to draw you near,
hope to draw you near.

Sunny day, it feels ok,
starry night, it seems alright

Angel

Gonzo. IMHO, you've graduated from MP3 Clinic to Show Off Thread. There's never anything worth commenting on in your mixes that couldn't be considered opinion. Like VHS' comment about the drums being too loud (quiet?), or my thought that the backups at the end of the song rise a bit too high above the mix...
Okay. I LOVE the bass tone.
Vocals are spot on.
Love me some wah!
Like the way the drums get distant in the break.
:thumbs up: :thumbs up: (two thumbs up)

hi steve,
thanks for listening and commenting on the mix.....
this is one of the hairier mixes i've had to do in a while...
some just fall together,
and some, like this one, battle back!!
LOL

as far as the soundcloud thing,
me personally,
i like to be able to click on a link, and have it come up in a new window.

that way, i can listen to something in the background,
but continue to either browse in the original tab link,
or move on to other stuff, while the new tab is still playing the link.

i hate having stuff stuck in a particular browser page, i find it very limiting.
but to each his own.

so, i went back last night and did a new 're-mix', and really focused on eq'ing the drums/bass synth track to bring out a bit more punch on the key parts of the kit (snare, kick, the synth bass is somewhat in the same frequency range as the kick, so bringing up elements of the kit are also bringing up the synth bass line, which is ok, i wished i had separate tracks for all that, but i don't, and i'm not letting that stop me.)

i raised the drum buss level up slightly, and dropped everything else slightly,
and not the drums sit louder, even tho they still have the big room attached to them.

i think it's a better mix!
i may try mastering it later, and re-post.
thanks for lending your ears

here's a link to the original mix:

i'm remixing this now...

Very well done. I love the bass guitar in the mix. Good one!

alright moptop!
thanks for checking this one out,
the bass on this one is definitely different than what i usually do..

the synth bass track was supposed to be the ONLY bass track,
but when i started mixing it, it wasn't enough.

i learned the weird quirks of the synth bass line (written in Sony Acid) and played over the top of it with a real bass,
basically creating this weird width of bass tone....
i think the mud factor on the original came from the deep freq range of the samples on the room part of the drum track, and the synth track...
working on remix now.

Hey Gonzo,

I know you're a very well respected member of this community and I'm a bit of a no name, but I will be candid just the same.

A lot of folks are saying your mixes dont warrant criticism but i disagree. You're very talented but i think every mix deserves criticism.

Overall this mix sounds a bit hollow, and the low end seems to be a bit cloudy. There seems to be some EQ work left in this.

The kick is very hard to hear and the bass is hard to define. I cant hear a completely solid bass line. I know the talent is there, ive heard other mixes by you and this one falls short comparatively. also im hearing some very high frequency twinges that i think you could tame in the OH's vocals and guitars ... but especially the OH's. maybe around 5 thousand cycles... that range?

Nice mix! but keep'er goin bud

On headphones, the only thing about the mix is the lack of presence from the drums. The tune itself, the composition, the performances are great. Nice sonic textures too. Great job

hey cmb,
hey, that's a cool critique,
i took it to heart,
and did some remix work this weekend...
i didn't like the hollowness in it either,
and tried a bunch of different approaches,
LONG STORY SHORT:

i remixed this song, folding all of the drums and bass synth to MONO.... which made it a lot punchier, and also made it easier to eq and to balance.

i left lead vox and bass centered, but EVERYTHING else has been thrown hard right/left in a classic L-C-R mix.

i like this better than any other version of it so far......

i'll post shortly.......

hey BH, thanks for listening....
if you read the above post, you'll see i have remixed it...

that 'lack of presence' i think i nailed on this one.

this mix sounds totally different than the first one,
so it's almost better if you just forget the first one,
and just consider the new one (which i'll post in a couple of days.....)

thanks again!
