Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Ok! We're nearly done with the glam album, probably the last song I'll solicit feedback for on it.

We're covering one of my glitch punk songs!

Teenage Girlfriend | Lipstick

2 minutes long, no guitar solos. Much more my wheelhouse! The only thing that's missing is weird, arrhythmic synth percussion!

As always, feedback is great!

intro is real good, to me. I'm hearing some mud from the reverb on the kick. like its tail is also carrying the low stuff. Can you EQ that reverb on the kick? The "time traveling" lines at the end seem pretty loud too. Not much else to comment on other than that. Nice work Steve

Reverb is shared between kick and snare. I left it a little louder than some of the other tracks since it's more "ballady". Should I just nudge it down a touch?

Clever song. Did you write this? Tight playing all around. Guitars sound great. The low end is a little lacking for me. Drums could sound a bit bigger, snare especially sounds like it's in the background. Not a big deal though. As with all your stuff lately, I'm getting that band-in-the-orchestra-pit thing. Maybe that's just your sound. What's the effect on the lead vocal? I hear it particularly in the early part of the song. Like the vocals are doubled and hard panned.

Alright mate, cool tune but I'm getting the same feeling as I get with the other ones. Vocals seem too far in front of the band to me, and the guitars don't seem like they have that much punch. Its probably just a difference in the way that we like things though as I've said the same thing about all of your Lipstick Generation songs! That comment aside, which might just be a style choice, there's nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, I wrote this one.

Ok. When I get home from work tonight, I will turn down the 'verb on the drums to see if I can get them bigger.
And turn up the guitars.

The lead vocal is tripled, with two of them hard-panned. There was much back-and-forth with the lead vocalist about this. He wants his vocals always doubled up, and I want it to not sound like he's singing in a tin can! :D We found something that seems to work for him and replicated it on this track for consistency.

Mix 2 is up: Teenage Girlfriend | Lipstick
Less 'verb on drums. More drums overall
More rhythm guitar.
More 'verb on vocals.

Lemme know how I can keep improving this!

(In retrospect, the song with a brass section, dual lead vocals, dueling guitar solo, and a "ska" ethic would probably have been a better choice for getting help on...)

Steve, this sounds much better now. I'm sitting in work listening on Senns and getting into it a lot more. I think the drums are a tiny bit too dry now - only a bit though. The guitars and vocals sit much better together.

I remember this from before. I like the song quite a bit.

I think the guitars and vocal sound great. Cool fuzz guitar. Harmonies are nice.

The kick-in at :36 is nice. But I was hoping for a bigger entrance. There's plenty of headroom for a real dramatic entrance.

I'm hearing the kick nice and clear, but I'm not hearing as much from the bass. The bass is coming through nicely in the pre-chorus. But it's getting covered up elsewhere.

Snare and cymbals sound pretty good.

Once the drums come in the lack of solid bass becomes more evident. I can hear bits of it but there's nothing giving it definition. I reckon, personal taste as usual, that a narrow peak of about 4 dB at 3kish would give it more.
I enjoyed the song!

This is a big improvement. The vocalist is part of the band, not dancing on stage while the band plays in the wings. There were a couple of spots where I found it harder to pick out the lyrics, which obviously wasn't an issue on the first mix. Not impossible the understand, just had to listen a little more carefully and ask myself, "what did he just say?" Maybe that's a problem, maybe not. If so, you might want to find a happy medium between the first mix and this one. The vocal itself sounds better. I'm not hearing that effect of listening to doubled--or as it happens, tripled--vocals that are flanging just slightly, as I was before.

I noticed on the first mix what rayc said about the bass being more audible here and there, and then fading. That's what I meant when I said the low end was lacking. Sorry, should have been more explicit and helpful there. It's here on this mix too. At times the bass sounds as full as you could want, at others it's hard to hear at all. I wonder if it's a compression problem? Have you got something on the master bus that's pushing the bass down when something louder triggers it? I'm not worried about note definition, but just the fullness of the low end.

I like the song!

Thanks for the feedback all!

New mix is up: I realized the bass was about 4-6 DB quieter on this track than the rest on this project, so it's substantially louder now.

That's... pretty much the only change, actually. I'm ok with the drum 'verb where it is, and I'm gonna sit on the slightly buried vocals for a few days to see how I feel.

*edit*

I might have heard this one before. I think mix 3 sounds real good. Guitars in the chorus have a classic 70s gibson sound. Only nit is I think the kick and toms could be beefier/more bombastic. There's plenty of space around. Is that you doing vocal?

Thanks guys.

Can you clarify beefy and bombastic? (Yeah, that's me on vocal). I probably uploaded this one last in 2010 (when soundclick was still relevant apparently.)

Listened to mix #3. Let me check the low end later tonight on a better system. I still wasn't hearing what I thought was enough of the bass. But let me check.

One thing I didn't notice on mix #2 - the wide panned doubled vox. I guess it's a matter of taste, but I generally prefer to have a doubled lead vocal down the center. It just sounds weird on headphones/earbuds.

OK the bass level is pretty good on mix 3. The kick is still dominating it a little bit tho - at least in the first half of the verses.

The bass is also a little muddy/woofy. Like there is something in the 300hz - 600hz octave causing a clarity problem. Not real bad, but I think it could be better.

Very minor problems at this point. It's a real cool song.
