Hello,

I use Cubase 5 and would like to know the proper way of using plugins such as Guitar Rig, DrumAgog and even the built in effects, compressors etc.

When I'm mixing a tune I use the effect or plugin for the selected track, then do the same for all other tracks that need effects etc.
I know this isn't the right way of using the software but don't know how to make this more memory efficient and easier.
Someone told me about being able to make a effect or plugin track / source maybe and pull from it for all tracks that need them, is this true.

Thank you,

Hi,
It sound like you might be talking about the difference between using the same reverb on six tracks and sending 6 tracks one single reverb.

I don't know cubase so hopefully someone else can guide you better, but the general idea is that you set up an auxiliary track with a reverb on it, then you use a send from the various channels that you want to go through that reverb.
The send is parallel to, and independent from, your normal channel outputs so the reverb would usually be 100% wet.

You can use the same technique for any plugin you like but realistically it's going to be time based effects more often than anything else.
EQ and compression are usually more track specific, unless maybe you're bus processing some drums or a group of backing vocals or something.

That's the loose idea, anyway.

For instruments/virtual instruments, you're doing it right. Those just get inserted on whatever track needs them.

Thank you so much for your quick reply!!!

Yes, that's it, I just need to research how to do this.

Thank you again, I really appreciate it.

In general, if you want to alter the audio, you would use an Insert; say for EQ, compression, Guitar Rig, etc. If you want to add to the audio, you would use the Sends; like reverb, delays, etc. To do a Send in Cubase, you would create an FX track, assign the effect you want, then use Sends from each channel you want to go to that track.

With Inserts, it's assigned in each track. For me, each track will get an instance of a compressor plug. It might be the same plug used on each track, but with different settings. Just like having a rack full of compressors.

You can assign multiple tracks to one compressor as a means of "gluing" them together. You would create a Folder Track or somethig similar. NOt sure what they are called in Cubase 5.

Thank you hth!

This sounds familiar, just something I haven't setup yet. This will help my PC resources I hope, yes?
I will delve into this as soon as I get home this evening.

Thank you so much!!!

If you use several instances of the same reverb/delay at the moment then, yes, this will most likely take a noticeably load of system resources. :)

Thanks...and thank you all so much. I'll let you know how I do.

Great advice given. :)

I wonder if this would be better in the Cubase forum?

I would have noticed it sooner if it were. Though kinda I have my hands full right now anyway...
