Hello everyone,

I need advice on getting new audio interface since my old Fast Track Pro is dead.

Price range is 200-300$, I don't need more than 2 inputs, but I would like to get some with best headphone output quality
in this price range (or maybe more if it's necessary), if there is any, or should I get some headphone amp too?

(I'm using AKG k240 Studio, but I'm planning to buy AKG k712 Pro soon.. Monitors are Yamaha HS7)

Since you are not stinting yourself on headphone quality (!) you would do well IMHO to avoid the "bottom feeders" of AIs. My standard reccy is the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6. Yes, it has two extra line ins and outs but then if you want something a cut above you are likely to get extra I/O.

Never read of anyone having a problem with the KA6's cans output* and the K712s are above average sensitivity at 105dB and of sensible impedance, 62R. The KA6 has excellent and very stable,V low latency drivers. It is mooted that RME had a hand in the converter design? Whatever, I have one and am very pleased with it. I know of two people who have bought one at my suggestion and they still talk to me!

*Bit of an issue with some AIs however. The very excellent Tascam 1800 is reported to have a rather wimpish HP amp but I suspect this is more a lack of "gain" than raw power. If, as we all should, we track at -18dBFS or even a bit lower, the HP amp might not have enough gain to please say a drummer. If the mix were peaking at -6dBFS there would not be a problem. The addition of a headphone amp might therefore be a useful idea WHATEVER AI you buy. I recently bought the wee Behringer HA400 and at first harken it seems fine. It gives that extra drive mentioned above and of course can supply 4 sets of cans.

BTW, Had a FTPro. Son still uses it in France on an XP Dell lappy. The KA6 is WAAAAY better than the FTP in almost every respect and the Pro was not at ALL bad!

Dave.
