Hey guys,

My name's Ben - I'm new here. I have an instrumental track that I'll be adding vocals to soon (attached). Just for practice, I wanted to see how decent I could get the mix sounding. I'd really appreciate any feedback anyone can offer. Basically, I just want to get the best mix possible and am seriously willing to work hard to improve upon it.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Ben

Hi, Ben - on first listen, I'd say the mix is good, regarding the balance of instruments, but it's seriously lacking "air" for want of a better term. The acoustic guitar seems to be nicely recorded, as does everything else, but the sound lacks sheen (10 kHz+?), particularly with the drum kit. Just a bit muffled. I would try a subtle high shelf lift on the drums from about 8 kHz upwards and see how that sounds.

Thanks for that advice - I sensed there was a lack of depth from both ends of the spectrum. Would you suggest I add the shelf to the entire drum bus? Should I add a shelf to anything else?

I can't hear any other instruments in your mix at the moment that might have those "air" frequencies in them, other than the acoustic guitar. You could try a subtle lift on that, but until the vocal is added, then it's difficult to judge the amount that would be appropriate.

I like the guitars, they really sound good. The drums seem like they could use a little lift (treble), the snare seems lo-fi/bassy to me. I might compress the bass a bit so it isn't quite as punchy, a little more even might do it good I think.

Are you planning on adding any vocals or is this more of an instrumental? Really nice piece, very dynamic. The piano/bells is a nice touch.

Wow, thanks a lot man! That's really helpful - I'm gonna try adding the high shelf on the kit I think... Hope that brings it to life a bit more. I am adding vocals this weekend - just wanted to get some practice with the mixing side of things. Glad to know its not abominable so far! :)

I thought the clean electric guitar sounded good. The acoustic guitar sounds pretty good too.

I thought the bass was too sterile sounding. Like it had a big-ish low end boost and had the low mids sucked out.

The drum part was too busy. I'd go for a simpler part - which I think would support the song a little better.

The quiet sections were sometimes almost inaudible.

The chime sounding stuff nearer to the end was a nice added touch.

Thanks, bud! I was actually wondering about the quiet acoustic sections - would it be good to raise the acoustic during those sections (since I don't want it too loud in the mix for the entire song), or is that something I should leave for mastering?

I suppose it depends on how it gets mastered. If it were me, I'd set the levels like I want them at the mix stage. If mastering/squashing ruins that, I'd do some fader rides during mastering. But that's just me.

I agree with a Bubba Po that the drums need some high end sizzle. I think the tune is good. Just fine tune the mix a little and this will be great.

I think it sounds just fine. The drums could have more high-end like everyone said, but I am really not fond of using too much EQ. If you have to boost something more than 3db, IMO its better to record things again.

But I dont think the mix sound bad at all...I could listen to it the way it is with a smile on my face, lol.
