I was finally able to work on a new song today. Although I don't think I did good enough of a job. I might be close. I just recorded some vocals for the track today. I had started working on it before the summer. Not sure it's any good yet. I don't think it's coming out exactly how I want it to, but some input could help me to take it where it needs to be. :thumbs up:

At work so listening through crappy headphones, but sounded good to me. The guitar sound nice. How did you get the stereo effect? It sounds like one take that you copied and put a delay on maybe? I can't tell for sure but it sounds good.

The guitar I recorded twice and panned left and right at 70% instead of 100%.
 
that sounds great mate,nice aggression going on in your voice .. enjoyed listening :)



pretty sure your not after mix comments yet,only thing imo that lets it down are the whimpy drums .. the quality of them isn't in the same league as the rest of the recording (which is rather nice :) ) ...

few bits of phrazing are off here and there ... vocals could come up a bit (but thats mix!)



defo going in the right direction,its a good balls out rock heartbreak ballad with attitude :D

Thanks. It sounds weird as hell to me lol. I think I can do it better and it seems like there's some weird wobbly effect from the delay or something. The drums are about as good as I can get. I can't really tell if they sound weak or not lol.
 
I was thinking the drums sound a little lo-fi relative to the rest too. They're a little bit dry and muddy I think?

With the lyrical vibe of the rest of the song, I might consider trying to bring everything else down to the drums' level quality-wise. Go for more of a gritty, outlaw-country vibe.

I don't really know how to go about that. I'll experiment. And see if I can't find a way to make it work lol.
 
Sorry for the double post. I deleted the vocals from yesterday and hit it a little harder today. Cleared it up quite a bit and this is MUCH closer to what I'm going for. Still stuck with the shitty drums, but F it... LOL

 
I really like this song. Reminds of old Allman Bros or David Allan Cole. The only things that stick out to me is when you are strumming the high notes they are louder compared to the rest of the guitar parts. I love the little guitar licks you are doing but there is a lot of contrast in volume between those and the strums(for obvious reasons)....If it were me I would at least try to go back and record just the licks on a separate track and see if they can be brought forward a little. The other thing has already been mentioned and thats the snare. It sounds dead and dry. I think I remember you use EZDrummer? Can you just switch to another sample? The rest of the drums sound ok for this song. Regardless, I dig the song...good job.

Hey thanks alot for the feedback. Are you saying the strumming is louder than the lead licks? I learned how to play bluegrass music just for that type of thing. I wanted to be able to throw down some little licks and shit on the acoustic and play rhythm at the same time lol. I haven't recorded the lead guitar yet. Which I normally do last. What I'll probably do is record the licks as a part of the lead guitar so it'll have more volume and you'll hear it quite a bit better.

There are a lot of other snare samples. Can you give me an idea of what you think the snare should sound like? Maybe a youtube video of a song that has an awesome sounding snare. Then I can try to fake it lol.
 
Yes the strumming sounds louder to me than the licks, and its probably just because single notes will generally sound softer than all the strings strumming at once. I have a hard time recording an acoustic myself because the higher strings seem to "cut through" a lot more than the lower strings and its hard to get around without playing around with mic placement and maybe some EQ. You want the strumming to sound full yet not over powering. I think your strumming parts need to come down a notch and your licks to come up a notch. If your going to put some lead down, then I would just use that track to record those licks along with the lead and bring the strumming down.

As far as the snare, I would just use something a little brighter and maybe a touch of room on it. I usually just scroll through until I find one I like then tweak it to match the song. You don't want it to stand out too much, but a little brightness will go a long way with this song. Again, I really like the song and I like your voice on it. Really cool stuff man.

Hey thanks man. I appreciate it. I been working on the vocal style for a long time now. I'm going for David Allen Coe, meets George Jones, meets Misfits Era Danzig, yet still in my own natural voice. So, basically I'm trying to sound like an aggressive bad ass outlaw that can sing a little too. LOL.
 
I don't know exactly what you mean by "new song," but I see you're in TX too, though I don't know which part. If this song was written anytime within the past few months, I can't imagine how it could be a "warm" Texas day. The only accurate phrases that come to me are:

balls hot
sweaty ballsack hot
hell with a broken AC unit
core of the sun

:)

Anyway, cool tune with good energy. Sounds a little muddy to me in the bass and low mid range areas, and the vocals sound a little loud to me. Cool vibe though!

LOL. Well I have been living in the RGV for the past 6 years and everywhere in Texas is warm compared to here LOL. You don't know hell until you've lived in the RGV. I agree the vocals are too loud, but I hope it'll sound better once they're settled into the music lol. I'm not exactly sure how to deal with the bass and low mid muddiness. Any suggestions on how to go about it?
 
I listened to mix #2. Vocal was nice and clear and resonant.

I thought the acoustic guitar sounded pretty nice.

The mix has a general muddiness to it. Mostly from the bass I think. I think you could turn down both the bass and the kick.

The cymbals have a real cheap sound to them.

Ouch! I've never been quite that far south. I grew up in the Houston area, so I'm familiar with Texas heat and humidity, but you have me beaten, sir! :)
 
Ok, so here's my 3rd mix. I'm just touching up here and there. I'm not sure there's a drastic change in anything. But I did switch out some vocals that I though were a little pitchy. I think I missed a few though lol. I also bumped up some background vocals during the chorus parts. And I also added a bit of treble to the snare drum. I think I might have cleared up a bit of the bass mid range that one of you guys mentioned as well. Let me know if it's any better or not lol...



EDIT.

Shit already did a mix 4. I think the vocals were turned down to much in mix 3

 
First time listening - went right to Mix4.... sounds good no problems popping up while listening.
