"Thief"

well,
a lot of folks have checked it out, at least.....
so i hope a few folks dig it, something i wanted to share.


i'll be pulling this one real soon, i've already begun the final mix

The drums were clearly not recorded...they were simulated werent they? Anyway, I think the snare is sounding bad, without presence, maybe Ezdrummer? I'm sorry if they werent sampled...but thats what it sounds like.

The vocals overdubbs dont really fit with each other...the vocals were well performed IMO, but the overdubbs are not so good.

I think you could mix and perform this song better, aswell as polish the arrangement, because it sounds like you just put together 3 different songs in one.

For me, it was hard to get a feel for the mix. I have to agree with CM, song was probably too short to have three parts that were so different. I think they would all fit, but the transition was rather quick.

I usually wouldn't say this, but making the song longer could help the three parts go together. I could see this being a 5-6 minute plus song to give each part its space.

Because that, I had a hard time saying one way or another on the mix (that probably doesn't make since). I didn't hear anything wrong with the mix, and the drums didn't add or take away as the song never seemed to get into a groove.

It sounds like it would be a killer song, but I feel it needs to be bigger (longer). I hope this was constructive.

the drums are 24 bit wav files from Superior Drummer.....
so, not simulated.

the snare sounds great!!!

well, yes, it's subjective....
most of the folk that have critiqued this particular song on other sites,
have liked the drums.


as it is, i'm still looking for, tweaking, for a snare that really speaks to me.

as it is, last night, i changed the kick and snare, and found a pair that seems to work better on this mix.

as far as the vocals,
i don't know what i would change, they are exactly as i want them....
it's simple three part harmony, that along with the lead vox, just supports the melody.

there are 3 distinct 'motifs' for sure, but as so many of my listeners will attest, they like things changing,
and not getting so locked into repetitive boring patterns,
this is a conscious arrangement decision on my part,
to stand out in some unique fashion,
knowing that it will work for some, not for others.

i'm ok with that.


and i appreciate your candor, and an honest critique is always what i seek.

i wonder,
if i add a softer section at the beginning, with this particular synth approach i'm hearing,
that adds a bit of 'introduction' and a bit of length,
i wonder if THAT would work?

i'm also worried that making it much longer,
makes it harder to catch the ADHD crowd............!

I am not looking for a bashing argument with you, but if you use samples, unless its for electronic music or Coldplay's shitty new songs (LOL), it means you are using MIDI sounds to simulate a drum sound.

Like I said, it would be okay in some contexts, but I think your mix deserves a real drum sound. If you cant do it...thats okay then...I wont say you MUST have this or that...Its just a critique, ok?

If you like the way the vocals sound, its okay aswell, I just said what I think about it, but who am I? Like I said, if you are happy with it, fuck it.

Every type of music has their type of audience. If you are making music to yourself and few other people, you dont really have to pay attention to arrangement, it becomes subjective. But as an artist, I think the more you are aware of you sound, the more beneficial it becomes in terms of performance, recording, mixing and having better results.

Dont be mad at me, okay? I'm here to criticize, thats what this forum its all about.

no problem man, it's cool.
i don't ever argue, man, i listen to what someone suggests, and if i feel it has value, i definitely use it!



i have a very clear vision of what i want my stuff to sound like,
and it's NOT like the majority of major label release stuff you hear today.
i almost never buy that stuff, because it's not what i want to hear.

so i make what i want to hear, from scratch.

i use real drums when i can, and i prefer to do it that way;
but for the most part, the 24 bit audio i pull out of the superior program almost never hangs anyone else up.
so it's cool too.

Just in the interests of clarity, that's not really accurate.
It used to be in the days when there were sample banks of synthesised instruments but that's not very common these days.

Midi is now more commonly used to trigger pre recorded pro-studio samples so, really, you're using midi to simulate a performance rather than the sound of an instrument.

Exactly, and EZDrummer sounds are actually very good.
I haven't listened to the OPs song yet so no comment there.
