The synths are pretty loud. They're more prominent than the vocal. I can still make out the vocal. But the vocal should be featured, and it's not because the synths are loud.

I thought the singing was good. I thought the vocal effects were cool.

I think the mix is missing some low end. It's also missing some punch. There are spots where there is supposed to be some "umph" hitting the listener. But there is nothing hitting the listener. There's no powerful snare, power guitar, power bass or anything supplying the "umph" that I think you want.

The drum samples are kind of thin.

Yeah, I totally agree with TripleM (I'm seeing a pattern... I tend to agree with him a lot of things, haha).

Vocals sound good. The synths I think could probably be reduced by adding reverb. In other words, you may not need to slide the faders down on them, but make them softer by applying some reverb to them (I thought they needed reverb anyways, so this may be killing two birds with one stone).

I as well think the snare is weak, but I think the kick gets lost in the mix as well.

Good to hear some more stuff from you David...I can tell you the last few songs you have recorded have been really enjoyable and they also seem to have more "hook" in them. I like this one too, agree that the synths are just a little too loud....overpowering the vocals. Try bringing them down a little and see if everything else becomes clearer.

Million thanks to all. I am always nervous about bass, but you're right, I do want some punch.

Your feedback is much appreciated. it's Friday and what better thing to do than mix. :)

I have come to the conclusion, I like pop. Just not always the way it is done in mainstream. Rather than run away from something I like, just don't do what I don't like. I do love a good hook.

Thanks for the listen.

I enjoyed the tune. I'm not going to repeat what already been said about the synths. I though the vocal was good. I loved the part where the bass was doing a riff and the guitar amp was feeding back with the high pitched feedback. (I guess it was the amo.. may have been synth). Anyway, I thought it was cool.
Great song man!

I think all of the suggestions were spot on. I thought it was going to be a 30 minute fix, 4+ hours later ...

Hopefully this went in the right direction.

Good tune DM - strong melody and I like the arrangement. Bass tone on the update is really nice too :)

There's just something about the vocal processing that doesn't quite fit with the rest of the mix for me. I think it's that it's a bit roomy in a way that everything else isn't - is there a short delay on the track or maybe the verb settings?

Tune sounds close to being done to me, and if you could get the vocal sitting nicely, I think you're there. Good work.

Thanks Rob.

I have two mixes going here. One is everything going to a convolution reverb (I get that mix) and the the Master, then balance the reverb with the rest of the mix. I might be heavier on the vocals than the rest going to the reverb. Before I adjust, I'll wait for others to comment, I don't hear it (over familiarity on my part?) , but that doesn't mean it isn't a little heavy.

Gah! You should update the first post with information that there is a new mix. I listened to the first one and started writing down some thoughts only to realize that it had been superseded by another mix (not that I mind, really, but still, I think the first post should always have the current mix).

The mix seems imbalanced overall. There is a lot going on in the midrange, and the bottom and top are both under-represented. I think that the lack of a bottom end is the most pressing issue right now.

The vocals also have a bit of a harsh presence to them.

This has pretty catchy melodies and progressions. It would be worth it to keep working this mix, IMO. Nice one.

After you sing 'a new sunrise' that bass is so spacey that you could have put an effect on the vocal on the syllable 'rise' that echoed its way into the bass part. Mix is fine.

Thanks for the input, and should have updated first post.

Thanks for the feedback.

Good idea, I will work on this a little more and and see if I can get that echo in there.

Third mix - Changed the vocal just slightly (changed reverb mix) to get it to fit better in the mix. Cut a little in the middle (kindafishy).

I did try using a delay on "Rise" but I couldn't get it to sound right (Dobro). I though it was a good idea, I just couldn't seem to execute on it.

I appreciate all who listened and commented. I will leave the three versions up for a week or two in case others want to hear the difference.

Listening to the latest mix (above) and comparing it to my memory of the first mix I heard, this one sounds much better. Everything is nice and clear and in it's own space. The vocals are sitting sweetly on the top as they should be. (You voice reminds me of the singer from The High Strung every time I hear you sing and that's a good thing.)

The only nit for me is the lack of an intro but I kind of like the way it just starts and there's no real introduction to the track.

I'd stick a fork in that one and call it done. Good stuff Dave. :thumbs up:

Pretty cool tune, bring up the guitars and drums in the mix.. Synths can stay where they are if you fix the low end and bring up the other instruments.

The mix is lacking in low end, you need to eq the bass/kick/snare to add some low end to give the song some power.

I think the levels are very close, just some minor tweaking..

About the intro, I have to say I have a hard time with intros. I usually go on way to long and then can't get out of it.

Thanks for your time and feedback.

nice song,enjoyed it thanks :)

personally i think your mix levels are off,but the song comes through ok :)

Yes. I was going t say the same thing. I think he nailed it on the first mix, and then the other mixes, too.

Like Kindafishy, I was half-way through typing about the first mix, and then realized there's a second mix. So, I was half way through typing about the second mix, and then I realized there's a third mix.

I really like this tune. You have a perfect voice for this kind of song. The levels are pretty good now.

The two things that I noticed are:

1) The drum levels seem to have gotten lower with each mix, to the point that the snare seems to have almost disappeared in parts of Mix #3. They also have a plasticy quality to them that usually happens with too much compression.

B) The snare seems to be out of phase or something. It has that flangy, thinned out sound that I've had happen to me often if my snare is out of phase with my overheads.

Other than that, very nice.
