Almost done re-mixing, re-singing, and re-playing some of my tunes that I want to put out on a CD. Just a couple more and then I won't bother y'all for a while.

I just re-did this one, which is about a year old, give or take a few months.

Personally, I find the vocals too loud, but since I'm usually told my vocals aren't loud enough, I took a chance and made them louder than I'm comfortable with. Please let me know if I can turn them down....please! :D

Your thoughts on this are welcome, as usual.

Thanx

SHOULDA DONE DO

Shoulda Done Do (words and music by RAMI)

Once upon a time is a mighty fine opening line when I'm dieing to find something to say
No lesson this session just confessing pleading chronic possession and I'm only messing around
Tic toc and you don't stop no this ain't no hip hop the clock is ticking while I'm talking to you
No riddle when you diddle with your little fiddle meet me in the middle where the sun don't shine

Never did done what I shoulda done do
Big fat brother that son of a gun's got an eye on you

Chorus:
Never did done what I shoulda done do
The future looks bright behind me
Never did done what I shoulda done do

Cut my neck on a blade I made from the hearts clubs diamonds and the spades life laid on me
Mirror mirror on the wall watch the blood fall total recall and it's all a bad bad dream
Big surprise when you realize staring at the real lies reeling at the real world through real eyes
The same game all but the names remain the same got no one to blame ain't that a shame

Never did done what I shoulda done do
Big brother that futher-mucking son of a gun's got an eye on you

Chorus:
Never did done what I shoulda done do
The future looks bright behind me
Never did done what I shoulda done do

Slow down no one throwing down a showdown bound to go around and come around and round again
Take a ride throw your pride aside you'll find nothing to hide on the other side

Chorus:
Never did done what I shoulda done do
The future looks bright behind me
Never did done what I shoulda done do done do

Big fat futher-mucking son of a gun

Yeah, you can turn them down. I'd've mixed them a dB lower. Maybe 2.

I love the back and forth vocal thing. I'm gonna borrow that trick. Thanks. :D

One major issue, though: the lyrics are ungrammatical. :D Futhermucking? Shoulda done do?

Really, really nice. Satisfying rock swagger with interesting vocal work and complete with slide solo. I'm supposed to be getting stuff done today, not listening to your stuff. One more listen just before I get back to the needfuls...

Oh yeah, one more thing... it s-o-u-n-d-s good. I'm talking about pure sonics here, not the song or the performance - the raw experience of the soundwaves on my earholes. It sounds good.

Awesome! You have no idea how nice it is to read that. :D

Cool. yeah, I've dome the overlapping vocal thing a couple of times over the last few years. I've always liked that for some reason. Originally, it was all sang on one track, but when I re-did it today, I thought I'd try the 2 track overlapping thing, and it seems to work for this tune.

Hehe...Yeah, I know. This ain't Shakespeare, futhermucker. :D

Awesome. man. That's great to hear. Thanx a lot.

I'll go turn down those vocals now.

Hehe...Just had a listen after taking a nap. Christ, those vocals are loud. Re-mixing now.

OK...Done. They're at a level I can live with now. Hope they're not too low, but I don't think so. (Same link above)

Really close. Don't get carried away and drop them even more lol.

An idea/question: how different is the processing on each vocal? You want the same space on them, but you could change up EQ, distortion, maybe even compression to get more separation if you wanted it. Whatcha think?

Good question.
You know what, I treated them like one vocalist who just happens to be over-lapping himself at the end/beginning of each line. So, they're identical in every way really. I don't think treating them differently would work in this particular case. I can see how it would work, but I'd never be comfortable with it in this tune, probably because I just had this over-lapping idea at the last minute and extended the end of one line on purpose so that it would carry over past the beginning of the next line. Originally, I just sang the whole song on one track, so I still sort of hear it that way.

I'm glad the level is where it is now & NOT LESS.
The lyrics are amusing and detailed - they need to be heard and understood.
All else is excellent.
Well done, AGAIN, RAMI.

I swear that there were a few clips in this track during the intro.
0:12-0:13, there's a little pop.

I think the song has an interesting contrast between rather dark guitar and bass tones and bright and clear vocals and drums.
RAMI, you're almost rapping this tune.
I didn't know that you could spit with the best of 'em. ;)

The mid section in this tune is the best. The guitars have some interesting high end hsssh going on that fits nicely.

I don't hear it. Not saying it's not there, I just don't hear it. I'll check it out thoroughly with headphones later.

I'm one of the few rockers that actually really digs good rap. I listen to Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre on a regular basis. I find the rythm in rap vocals is comparable to tap dancing. It's got a lot do with drumming.

I hear it a 0:18 again.
It's just before the "duh duh duh!" part on the guitar riff each time.

Dilated People are my homies of choice. But don't you think that I forgot about Dre :listeningmusic:

Vocals are at a good level now. Maybe it's just me, but I think the guitar lead part as it starts (around 2:15) before the slide is a little uninspired, like you were just warming up. Otherwise I've got nothing to suggest, all sits together well.

I had the old mix sitting here from downloading it a couple weeks back so I A/B'd them.

The old mix was really good. I don't think you actually needed to do a remix. The differences are pretty subtle, but I do prefer this new mix over the old one.

The upper mids are a little more forward in this one, which is helping to give definition on everything and helping the mix to jump out of my monitors a little more. I am also getting the sense of more aggressive transients in this mix. Everything is punchier.

The only thing that I actually wanted more of from the original mix was a little more grit from the awesome guitar progression in behind the "shoulda done do" section. I'm getting that here.

Really like the guitar tone in this one.

I didn't hear the "vocals are too loud" version. They are sitting well for me here.

Cool, thanx man. I didn't deliberately do anything to change the overall EQ or timbre of the mix. But it probably just happened as a result of playing with it. The main reason I re-did this was to re-sing the vocals. I never really liked the original vocal performance.

Ah ok, this is important. Do you mean the guitar playing the chords there, or the doubled rythms playing the notes with the bass?

Great. Yeah, believe me, they were too loud. Not just by my "I hate my voice" standards. They were just too loud.

Thanx a lot Fishy. I really appreciate that.

The chords. The progression there is awesome. I just wanted more bite and definition to them. Whether it is from slightly different EQ, different (if any) compression settings with a bit of a longer attack, something else that may have been masking it slightly that has changed (vocals maybe), or even how a limiter might be affecting things, I am finding that the definition has been teased out a bit.

OK cool thanx. I don't think I did anything drastic (or even subtle) to change that. I might have turned it down when all was said and done, without really meaning to turn it down. I think it's just a volume issue. I love those chords, too. I'll definitely give it a listen and try to bring that part back.

Hey RAMI,
I've mentioned your vocal levels more than once. You know I think you have a smashing voice with great tone, and I always want to hear a little more of it.
From the comments I think you've already pulled them back a bit from the first posting?

Right now every word is super clear without being in my face.

Are the vocals currently louder than you'd usually mix them?
The guitar tone helps the vocal along in this particular tune, I think.

I'm liking the way the vox are right now. :)

Thanx a lot, Steen.

Yes, you're hearing the vocal track after I turned it down. It was really loud, and not just by my standards. My perception was off because I mixed right after doing the vocals. I can live with this volume on the vocals. Probably because I'm almost rapping rather than trying to sing, it's a little easy for me to tolerate my voice.

Thanx a lot.
