I have trouble understanding why many marching bands want their snare drums to sound like coffee cans.

I don't know why the drums sound like that. I went searching, but didn't find much, This was interesting, but:

I have trouble understanding why many marching bands want their snare drums to sound like coffee cans.

So you can hear them from a thousand miles away. And the tight bounce makes for easier superfast flamadiddlecues.

I guess the wail of pipes and the rattle of drums was intended to scare the enemy into submission.
