Capture internet streaming?

Hey felows!

There is a karaoke track I found online and that I would like to capture to my HD since I don't want to keep in the page while I use it. It was pretty easy to record streaming tunes when I used XP and sound card proprietary drivers but since I moved to W7 and ASIO I seem no to be able to find how to do that anymore.

Any idea? I use Reaper and Audacity.

Thanks!

:thumbs up:

Is it a YouTube video? There are a bunch of free converters. Just Google YouTube to MP3 or Wav converter.

When you get your interface you can run out of one PC/smart phone with a 1/8" stereo to 2 RCA male and record to another.

I am not aware of a way to do it internally.

You can always record the output into an input with a couple patch cables.

Oh, I know about this. Actually I could do this right now with the soundcard, I was just avoiding to use this resource. Thank you!!!

:)

Yan, were you asking about replacement interfaces the other day?

I do this kind of thing a lot. Capturing radio interviews for friends etc. I use the spdif out and input on my interface to record a loop-back.
If I do it in my recording software I can still hear the playback through main output at the same time.

Because it's digital there's no reduction in quality, at least not in the way that you could/would get with analog I/O.

I am not worried about quality at all as I am not going to use this recording anywhere unless to hear it and practice the guitar solos. I just am frustrated to have to use a cable to something that I used to do internally. It doesn't make sense that time passes and things gets worse. It really pisses me off.

There are a few ways to do it internally but they're a bit awkward and require some understanding.

Soundflower is one way. It's a virtual input/output system. Kinda like buses but for your OS.
It shows up as a real input / output in you OS preferences.

So, you set your system output to soundflower (2ch). That's where your source stream will now play to.
Open your DAW, set a stereo track with input from sound flower (2ch) and hit record.
Whatever is playing out will now record down to your DAW.

With this method you won't hear what you're doing. The audio never makes it to main outputs, unless you can persuade your computer to use 2 interfaces at once (real one and virtual one), or find some kind of audio hijack/reroute software.
I suppose that's no problem if you intend to record down a whole track or whatever, but it might be awkward if you're grabbing a section of something. You'd need to make notes of your start/end times in advance.

Some of the windows guys might know a simpler way. I know it used to be as simple as selecting "what you hear" in the windows audio settings.

PS: I have sound flower and some audio hijack software but I always end up just using S/PDIF loop through.
It's quicker, easier, and I have real time monitoring.

Eek! I did that but was really awkward. First I captured the video/audio with the trial version of 'Screen Recording Suite'. Since it only records 3 minutes each time, I had to make two captures. Then I used a freeware software called 'Any Audio Converter' and extracted only audio from both clips. Finally I imported two audio in Reaper, joined them and rendered to a MP3 file.

Are you just trying to capture the audio? I use Roxio Creator, and one of the options is to record whatever is coming through the soundcard. I've never tried it with my audio nterface slected as the osundcard, but would htink any DAW could do this if you have the AI selected as your system audio device.
If you mean capture the video, Firefox browser has a plugin to do that.

Hey Mike, yeah, only the audio. I will make a test with the trial version of Roxio. Thanks for the tip, mate!

If you can do D-D conversion using a digital connection on your audio interface, I have that on my Orpheus, then you can just take the stream offline. And if you have a Qobuz subscription like I have, can you then take CD streams offline too? Of course... Want to take any content whatsoever from your computer into a video audio file? No problems, MovAvi.

In this age and time there are solutions to this kind of stuff.

If quality is of zero concern I've used windows native sound recorder app (LOL!!!) to record realtime audio streamed from the net internally, but low quality spoken word mostly. It picked up the stereo mix. I was using an external USB mixer when i did it, which was the PC's only sound device. It showed as 'speakers' in the windows mixer and '2- USB audio codec' as the controller. Not sure if any of that is relevant to you with internal soundcard, but it would be 'speakers' in the windows mixer too if i remember correctly.
Many less convenient work-arounds as you know, just another idea. Windows sound recorder is so cool, retro and lo-fi, it's an insider's secret  Now i'm confused, why the hell did they remove stereo mix from the windows 7 mixer? I smell a conspiracy...;)
PS - joking about insider secrets
