Desk For a 16 Track Deck

Hey Ig,

Wish I'd kept the Ghost in storage to try out with the MS16....sounds like a good combination then? I've just started installing my new Allen & Heath GS3000 (looks amazing) but after connecting everything up I have a loud mains hum. Grrrrrrrr.....

After disconnecting everything, it's still there so I think it's the way I'm coming out of the Control Room outs into the 'unbalanced' Technics HI-FI amp I use. It was late so I went to bed! With fresh ears I'll sort it out today.

If it has a headphones point (I guess a desk that professional might not) it might be worth trying that. If the hum is still there on headphones you have an internal issue.

Thanks JP,

In the end it turned out to be multiple issues.....
First the Sony CD/Minidisk player was causing a ground loop being attached to the same amp....there is no earth lead on this player (just a two cable power lead....just like the Technics amp). In fact I think it's probably a bigger issue affecting everything. Because the desk is almost balanced on everything (even the AUX outs, but not the inserts) I wonder if you need to be a lot more careful about your 'unbalanced /balanced' connections...I've not given it a huge amount of thought.....seems I probably need to be more methodical. I have a Roland CF/CD recorder that I wanted use as one of the mastering machines as the desk has the ability to have three mastering machines wired into it (one +4 on XLRs, two -10 on phonos). The Roland CD2 is powered by a laptop type power adaptor and it had an awful loud buzz to it, so something's not right.
Another job to sort in the never-ending scheme of things.....mind you I do think it's a step up in mixing quality.

I've got three Presonus ACP8/88 wired across 1-16 inputs and 1-8 group outputs and having that amount of compression certainly gives everything a solidity and cohesiveness that I've not noticed before, so I know it's going to be worth it in the end.

16 track console

Looking for suggestions. Don't worry about price range for now.

Must be able to record to/playback from any of the tracks without repatching.

old analog guy here.. I had the bucks I would get the neotek 16 track console true inline analog console . just my opinion

If you are truly considering getting a decent sound, then a Mackie mixer should not be anywhere in the equation. Mackies sound like crap.
Many mixers will get the job done. You say rice is no objest, but then you're looking at Mackies. If you are new to the whole analog thing, then i high suggest a Soundcraft mixer. Why? They sound decent, can be modified to sound...awesome. And they are MUCH easier to care for than SSL or Trident desks. If there is a drawback, its the eq. But the standard eq is going to blow the doors off 80% of the digital plg ins ut there. You need UAD or Duende stuff to do better. So in order of Soundcraft boards for a person newish to analog gear.

1. Soundcraft 6000 - Has more routing options that other soundcraft boards. And has the built in meter bridge.
2. Soundcraft K3 - I like the buss monitoring system on this. Designed for live sound but has studio features.
3. Soundcraft Delta - basic inline console without losing any sound quality.

I worked on a SSL 9000, 4000, and Ghost. Mu soundcraft delta is modified. You could not pay me to give up my sondcraft fpr any one of these boards. I have also extensively used preamps costing 2K per channel. 99% of them go back because I'm getting equal or better sound from my board, plus eq routing etc that I cant get in a pre amp.

If you dont want to spend money on modifications (we charge $200 per channel) and you want a better sound, then step up to Anek consoles. But youre going to have wya more problems with those boards in terms of up keep.

Glad I found this thread! I need a board for a Tascam MS16 too.
There is a Soundcraft Delta DLX 16/4/2 console available in my area.
But it looks like there are 14 mono channels, two stereo channels and the four group channels.
Can I use this mixer with the MS16? Can I run tracks 15 and 16 into the two stereo channels?
I'm a little confused as to why the mixer is a 16/4/2, but doesn't have 16 mono channels.
