Am I on the right path?

I want record music. I have space, some money, and the motivation to go all the way

I want to have analog sounds, however I can't afford all the analog instruments. I want quality sounds. I'd love to have a Minimoog voyager, but I don't have 5k and etc.

My best hope to record now is to find samples and libraries of analog sounds on the internet, then manipulate them with a Midi controller through a DAW correct?

My budget is $1000, but if I need to wait and save more, please be honest.

So I need...

  • MIDI controller
    DAW
    Monitors
    Microphone to record my voice

Is this alright? Do I need other equipment?

I hope this doesn't sound arrogant, but musicians on Gorilla vs. Bear have succeeded with their own production of their music. That inspires me that I can do it. I hope to get some quality stuff out there and get featured on the site if my music is worthy.

Any help is appreciated, please be honest. Thank you for reading this.

I should note that I am not looking for a live set up, just a means of getting music out on the internet.

Audio interface with MIDI input and at least one mic preamp.

Since you are just staring out don't blow your budget on a few things, start slowly. there are a ton of free VSTi synths available to try out before you pay for Moog emulations.
If you're going to do the mixing you're going to need acoustical treatment in the room, and will need that for tracking vocals, too.

You're right, most do have USB these days.

I don't know if my digital piano has USB connectors, though. Might be worth getting a midi connectored interface for possible future gear purchases. I wonder if some midi-USB cable/box exists.

Do you even need midi connectors nowadays? My midi controller is USB.

It is ALWAYS worth having MIDI ports on an AI.

It is "said" that all DAWs will "see" an audio path, mic/guitar and a separate USB MIDI device but DON'T bet on it! Plus. A dumb keyboard with a USB port is NOT a MIDI interface!

It also must be very cheap to incorporate a MIDI circuit in an AI. Quite a few relatively cheap guitar amps manage it!

So, OP: Get yourself a Steinberg UR22 and a modest small D capacitor mic (look at the AKG p170 but even cheaper ones are pretty good). If you can spring £150-£200 for an AI look at the Native Instruments Ka6.

Both AIs give you Cubase...Lovely!

Dave.
