Why record with a computer when there are all-in-one portastudios?

I'm not wild about Norton myself, nor any of the apparent byproducts of running anti-virus software, but my employer insists that their portal is only compatible with Norton, so in order to be able to continue to work from home when I want to, I needed to keep it going. And I like to work from home.

We should start a "hands up everyone who doesn't have a problem with their recording pc" thread. I'll bet it'll outweigh those that have problems.

There you go. I've been using PCs to record since Windows 98 was the current OS. I never have problems, but I know how to set up Windows properly to avoid conflicts and disable unneeded services etc. These days almost no effort is needed to "optimize" a PC for audio and video work. They mostly just work right out of the box.

This brings up an important point: You have to know your tools! 20-30 years ago, if you wanted to record at a professional level you needed enough money to buy a 2-inch 16- or 24-track recorder, and a large format mixing console, and you also had to know how to align the recorder's tape heads and electronics. If anything broke, you had to either know how to fix it yourself, or be prepared to pay someone else. Today, anyone with an inexpensive office type PC, a $150 interface, and a $100 LDC microphone can record audio with very high quality. But you have to know how to record and mix, and for professional results you have to know how to deal with computers too.

I'm on my sixth Windows-based sound recording computer since the mid 1990s and have never had any problems. In my case they're used both for live sound playback in theatre situations as well as in my home studio. At the risk of tempting fate, I can honestly say that, in live use, I've had more lost cues using CD or Minidisk for playback than using a computer.

Where the computers have been replaced it's generally just technology marching on and me needing something with a newer OS or more RAM to keep using updated versions of my DAW software. Or, in the case of laptops, the batteries tend to go and I always have a mental argument about whether it's worth spending silly money to replace them considering how low the depreciated value of the whole machine would be.

...but I've never had any issues with any of my computers and my skills, while okay, are far from the expert category.

My computers all pretty much work fine until I do something stupid, the operating systems become obsolete or they just wear out. My nine year old laptop still works pretty well but the monitor illumination went out about four years ago so I have to use an external monitor.

LOL I was going to ask if you felt your mixes had improved without being able to see what you were doing, but then I read the very last bit of the sentence.... :D

On the now-defunct alt.audio.pro.live-sound newsgroup one of the regulars used to be totally blind but he still worked professionally as a live sound mixer. I never actually heard his work but I'm told his mixes were stunningly good. I'm not sure how he did it so I think I'll keep my monitor though!

Yup, that's always the case.

On a more amusing note, the good Dr. took the time to post something in my guest book. :D

If you mean me, then I'm not sure what you're trying to pull this time, but I have never posted in anyone's guestbook.

As for the rest... not worth bothering with.

you have a closed mind and have repeatedly show an inability to understand and use the equipment and advice given to you.
Further ..... I have said many times in other threads AND in this one that your way of working is just as good as any other way.
And THAT is the example of the closed mind ..... the positive things people say are ignored by you and the critical things get exaggerated and overblown by you.
You wouldn't be able to do squat if it weren't for this forum ....... so don't come around here anymore if you feel you've suddenly become such an expert and BTW ..... where is the music you make since I have agreed with you many times that the thing that matters is what you do with it?

Really ..... you've found a method that works for you so why do you feel such a need to insist that your way is the best way because 'puters are terrible?
Your way is the best way for you ...... it may also be best for other people too ..... hell, I don't record to a 'puter ( another thing I've said many times which you ignore in your defensive outrage) so I'm basically with you.

But you do a disservice to others when you declare that 'puters are a big problem when you simply don't have the experience and knowledge to back that up even a little bit.
You've tried with what, one or two 'puters?
It's a disservice to beginners to present that as enough experience to make statements or give advice to others.

That's really all I'm saying although I'm sure your reaction will be to further insist that you are right and we're all meanies.
What are you ......... 12?

For you to spend that much time composing a string of insults to me, just makes me feel somewhat sorry for you. I wouldn't mind if they were even halfway accurate but you clearly are another one who hasn't read my posts properly. I've been very open minded and taken the advice from those who DID offer it. Now, watch how quickly it closes when you build a straw man.

this is an example right here ........ there is NO string of insults there. I simply stated the facts ..... that you are a beginner and don't really understand 'puters. You simply can't point out a 'string of insults' since there aren't really any there so you're either delusional or a liar.
And I spent that much time carefully choosing my words because your reactions are silly and whiney and I thought it might be possible, if I said enough nice stuff, to reach you but obviously not.

And you reacted EXACTLY as I said ..... exaggerating anything not positive into imagined 'insults' and ignoring positive statements.
lol

Ok .... you want insults ..... you're a talentless douche.
and that's not an insult ...... it's an observation.

There .... if you're incapable of accurately responding to posts without imagining non-existant insults then I may as well have the fun of pointing out your lack of skillz.

post it! POST IT!!

lessee what the good doctor had to say.

Nah, it's nothing special. If he says it wasn't him, I have to believe him, I can't prove otherwise. It wasn't insulting enough to cause any sensation anyway. It was something like "You have great music but no personality" or something stupid like that.

and I don't really have anything against the doc except his ridiculous overreaction to anything that disagrees with himself.
He's come a long way from when he first showed up here and could do nothing.

But I don't like having to walk on eggshells around him so he won't read anything that isn't there into what I say.
Otherwise he seems like a decent sort.

Yeah, I hold back because I can't help sort of liking the guy. And, to be honest, regardless of what the cause is, I feel for him with all the computer problems. That can't be fun.

Yeah, I feel for him too. Would have loved to help correct his issues with his PC's, but it seems like nothing we say sticks. I always wanted to help him to find a better direction, but, I can't stand for anyone making blanket statements, that just are not true.

I just wish he would listen more, and not take offense by those who are here to help. Guess that happens all the time tho....

:(

How about just a screen shot showing his name even if you wish to block out the details of the actual post? If he's moving to PMs for insults then denying it when called, I think it's important to know. I've been victim of the same sort of thing.
