Hello everyone. This is my first post on the Home Recording forum, and I have a few questions for you.

Currently, I am using a Portastudio, an ART mic preamp, and using a SM57 and a AT2020 microphone. After recording several tracks and mastering them I decided I like the feel of using this type of device for recording and composing tracks, but would like to use the added benefit of using a DAW to edit and master the tracks. I particularly like how I can arm and record tracks straight from a tactile device, not by using my mouse. My question is what is the best device to use as a mixer, and controller(?) for a DAW type program, and which program do you recommend for a combination of affordability/ease of use. I already have a Tascam US144 audio interrace and a reasonably fast windows 8 PC. I also have some familiarity with Ableton Live. I will mostly be using this method to record electric guitar from an amp or DI, acoustic guitar, vocals, and possibly stand up bass.

What's your budget? Control surfaces are inherently expensive.

I'm not reall familiar with those controllers, but they seem to be for live use, not for home recording purposes. Possibly the Akai works with Ableton to 'write' the parameters that are being controlled?

That Presonus FaderPort seems a bit gimmicky to me - one fader and a pan knob. Is it really better to be pushing buttons to select what you are controlling, rather than using a mouse? At $111, I guess if you wanted more physical control at a budget, you could check it out.

One review on guitarcenter says: It allows my mix to sound less mechanical... and more emotional if that makes any sense. I wish I was able to write aux send automation and such but oh well If it only allows you to write volume and pan automation, that is VERY limited. And I don't buy the 'less mechanical' bit at all.

The Lion's share of all reviews are very positive.
Of course, you can't please all of the people all of the time...... :D

Also, a nice U-Tube Video about it from the great people at GearWire.
