I've been wanting a pair of ribbons for quite some time. I work on a regular basis with a medium size symphony and am dying to try a pair on the string section. However, I really can't justify Royers, etc..... and am looking at options in the $300/each arena. The Fatheads seem to garner a great deal of positive comments, any other similar priced ribbons of equal quality that can be suggested?

Hey Tomm - In that price range those would be the ones that I would have my eye on.

Yet they are made in China then given the once over before cascade releases them here in the US.
I followed that information and went out and got a few Nady cascade look a likes (RSM4) about $100. and to tell you the truth they work just as good as my cascades. In fact the motor looks identical.

Good info to know, I guess I'll take a closer look at the Nady's.

Great stuff Moresound.
Moresounds your man when it comes to mics

Myself and only speaking about myself here ..... I wouldn't go with them live.

What are you gonna do about the back capturing lobe?

I have bought a couple of mics from this guy, we are in Australia, but his prices are really good.

Alan.

Now ... that's interesting.

It's my understanding that the side rejection of a figure 8 is quite impressive. My hope is that by positioning the ribbons in this fashion, those pesky horns won't bleed through much. As of now, the string section gets 2-3 AKG 391's which have worked well. Only problem is that this venue has an installed system which is the Bose. The speakers are behind the symphony so GBF is a bit challenging. My thoughts are that figure 8's positioned in such a manner could be of a benefit.

That's some good figuring for the GBF - But who in their right mind put FOH speakers at the back of the stage!?!

Don't know where they got their advice, it does offer challenges.

Any chance of moving the speakers to out in front of the proscenium?

Probably not, their forward seating is within a few feet of the entire rise area. Another problem is that the stage (and room) is very wide. I think if they flew some cabinets it would work out better but there's another hurdle. In spite of what it is, it actually sounds fairly good, just tricky to position things.

Learning how to make it work the best you can, like polishing cow turds.

Try some of this
