This is my new band. We are working on a demo. Not a finished project, just the first test mix.

Thanks for any helpful comments.

Sweet Soul Music is the best cut, in my view.

Overall, rhythm section is tight and I like the sound of the drums. But bass sounds very tinny and that's a huge detriment to this medley. R&B bass needs a smooth, deep bottom end compressed for punch. I'd love to spell out parameters but it's really an ear thing. Give a close listen to some of the old Motown stuff and season to taste.

I'd also work on the vocal performance. It's really mechanical, on most songs. Sweet Soul Music is the only one where the singer sounds loose, comfortable and in command of the phrasing. I also think the vocals are a bit too far front in the mix -- again, except for SSM.

Hate to come down too hard on a sincere effort. But I really do feel it needs work -- performance and engineering -- if you wanna capture the groove of these classic songs.

Bigger bass? I can easily fatten it up. Thanks.

We're a brand new local band and not very well rehearsed yet. (In fact, some of us never sang before.) This is just a demo to get gigs. We are not selling ourselves as a Motown band. We are a variety rock band, just a couple of white boys. We just thought we would try our hand at this type of medley. (That bad, eh?)

I'll give the vocal mix another listen for levels. Thanks.
