Useless Plugins

See it wasn't even good for that though IMO. It just kind of twisted the source up a little and add some goofy noises. I don't know it just wasn't that useful.

- BBE sonic maximiser:

It never sounded good, this plugin was so bad I erased it. Worst money spent ever. Oddly enough though I have a BBE hardware bass preamp that has a true bypass sonic max on it and THAT one sounds fantastic.

Yup!

I have the BBE Di box and it is great also.

Are we talking about the same unit here, Guitargodgt?

I don't think so. I have this:

Your right - mine is the red over sized Di box.

Nice bass preamp!

I like it more than the sansamp bass driver DI. BBE does make some good stuff.

I was just having a look at their website and products just for kicks.. Why does every device have a "Sonic Maximizer"? What does that even mean?

I would say that (most of) Antress Modern Plugin are useless, not because they are bad but because they crash very often.

Strongly disagree. My computer is a 7 yr old piece of shit, and I use those plugs successfully all the time.

I use the Modern Compressor, now that I'm on Reaper. Neither Cubase 6 nor JBridge could bridge them successfully on my machine without crashing, for some reason. Sounds pretty good to my ear.

I love the Modern Compressor. It's my go-to compressor for vocals and kick/snare. The Density MKII is good for me too. The Density across a drum bus is like a room full of pornstars with no STDs. Heavenly.

the more I read about that crashing crap ( and latency ) the more sure I am that I'll never go to recording on a 'puter.

I can hook up any of my hardware stuff to anything else in seconds with my patchbay .... there are no system requirements ....... non-compatability doesn't even exist .......... and nothing crashes and the latency is nothing .......... seriously, it's nothing.

:D

Latency is a non-issue. Even if your buffer is set high enough for it to be noticeable, you just play along to the sound coming from your monitors/headphones and your DAW will automagically line everything up. I can only imagine it's a real issue if you're on a low-power computer and trying to play midi instruments, but even then, the DAW will line it all up, it just sounds weird.

Crashes and instability are more of a problem, but can be ironed out, although this can take time, patience and tech-savviness. The flexibility afforded by a PC setup is immense, although that's not always a good thing. Many find that limitations breed creativity.

Agreed - I always go for the Modern Compressor or the Softube version of the LA-2A that came with Komplete on my vocals. I haven't used the Density MKII, I don't think - I'll give it a go, although I'm sure I'd just find a room full of pornstars intimidating. Thanks for the tip!

I imagine if I lost everything and had to start over I'd go 'puter.
But I already have all this stuff from 40 years of recording so why change?
And it offers some real advantages in some areas such as being able to hook anything to anything ....... fairly unlimited patching abilities .......
I do use a recorder that's a puter (Fostex D-1624) and I'd like to grab a couple more or maybe the Mackie.
So I have limited cut and paste but otherise I'm basically doing it the same way I have since my earliest reel to reels.
I like it that way.

Having said that ...... if it all got stolen I'd most likely go 'puter in for no other reason than cost.
I'd still want a board with faders for mixing though.

and that's not acceptable. In much music where there's a lot of instrumental improvisation, extreme subtleties in timing are the entire point and make the difference between being technically correct but sucky and being subtle and wonderful. Sounding weird is, unfortunately, a hindrance to playing in a totally reactionary way with the tracks you're playing to.

Boob, I'm not trying to sway you here, but latency isn't really a problem unless you're using an old machine and CPU hog processes. My computer is relatively ancient and I can do everything I need to do with no latency. I've developed some workarounds, but they work. I can track and monitor in real time with no hassles. Crashing and instability isn't a problem for me either. If you were to go the computer route, I doubt you'd have any issues with either scenario.

oh, I'm swayed enough that if I started over I'd surely go 'puter without any doubt just like if I lost my record collection I wouldn't start over buying vinyl.
But I don't see any particular reason to switch since I do already have all that stuff.

I just made the switch LT, and no latency, no CPU limitations, no crashing.... just me thinking "Why didn't I do this years ago?"....

Actually, the thing that did make me do it was the (a) impending death of standalone machine (b) appearance of Win 8 - wanted to get in before that become the OS du jour...

Thanks for the info sir! Interesting...

Greg, tried MKIII yet? He added a little "color" knob to it. Sounds pretty awesome!
