So I have a Shure PG58 that was given to me by someone else but I was inquiring as to what you guys thought about it as a recording microphone. I know that it's a dynamic microphone, but does that mean it's not that great for recording? Is a mic like this intended more to be used as something for a live performance? Thanks for your help.

It looks similar to a Shure RS130 that I got at Radio Shack on clearance a few years back. That RS130 has a brighter sound than a lot of dynamics. I consider this a good thing since you can pull back the highs on a bright mic, you won't be as successful boosting the highs on a duller mic.

You can record with any mic that outputs a sound. The question is whether you'll get the kind of sound you want. Get a condenser mic and compare them. Since it was free you're not out anything. I imagine most people who do recording have more than one mic. Your concept of what you want may change as you discover what's possible.

I have used a PG58 in live performances and to record some vocals. It's not great. In fact, it's at the bottom of the list of mics available to me that I would reach for to record. But being "not great" doesn't mean it's not usable. Since you got it for free, you should keep it around and try it out on some stuff. The fact that it is a dynamic mic is not what makes it not very good for recording. The fact that it is a not-very-good mic is what makes it not very good for recording.
You should easily be able to find recommendations on excellent, affordable recording mics (both dynamic and condenser alike) by reading the threads here.
