Well, I was expecting extreme suck, the way you talked about your singing. It is in need of some practice, but you definitely have something to work with. You do have potential here.

We really need to discuss what you are recording with. Is this just using a laptops built in microphone?

Listened to it.

You're good. No lie. I didn't detect any pitch problems except a sour note at 10 sec.

But my god... what did you use to record?! :p

Just kidding.

What song was that by the way?

haha yup and a poor quality one at that :/ and every time I listen to it I cringe every time i sing 'phase' (the word at 10 sec)

Yup I'm working with a dell something mic. and its ordinary people by john legend :)

$40 isn't too bad, I might be able to make that work... I'm getting a job up at school next semester so I can set some cash aside

Yeah, it is time for you to invest a bit of money into your recording gear. It will help you to actually hear what you are capable of, and learn from there.

No, your family was not lying to you. You do have a natural talent, that could be made into something special. You need to work it though.

Nika Gordham, is one of the female members here, that is quite good. You may be able to get some 'girly' advice from her.

I'm going to find a way to buy a mic then. I'll make it work. I feel like when I record myself I sound so so much younger than I do in real life... maybe it has to do with bad mic quality. I guess I'll find out once I get a better one!

And thank you guys I appreciate it. I'm really trying to work on my voice, practicing breathing and all of that. I know I have so much I can improve on, and I've found in the past, the more I sing, the better I get so that's what I'm aiming for! I just didn't want to sing in my dorm if my voice was really bad... One day my friend and I were singing (just like for fun, to music on my phone) and someone commented that I had a nice voice and my friend laughed and said "you're kidding me, right?!" and kept bringing up how terrible I was so I was like, mixed signals here...

And I'm checking her posts out as we speak, thank you so much!

I just didn't want to sing in my dorm if my voice was absolutely horrible. One day my friend and I were singing (just like for fun, to music on my phone) and someone commented that I had a nice voice and my friend laughed and said "you're kidding me, right?!" and kept bringing up how terrible I was so I was like, mixed signals here...

Sounds like a jealousy thing to me. You obviously have potential.

Use that, and any criticism, to make yourself better though. Nothing good comes from complacency. It is your own determination that will make you what you wish to be capable of.

I'm assuming you gents both sing as well, I'm going to creep on your posts ;)

And I'm definitely using that criticism for my benefit. Its driving me to want to become better and better. I just love music so much, I recently bought a keyboard and have been teaching myself to play piano and I really would love to be able to sing along so my drive to learn is pretty strong!

And also, the mic suggestion that Crow gave, is just a stepping stone. It will be better than what you are using, but you will find that it is not anywhere near the best. This can be a total money pit, but if you believe in yourself, you will find a way to make it happen.

Most important, is that singing makes you happy. That will determine what comes of your voice.

Maybe I'll start with that mic and see where things go... keep upgrading as things progress :)

I do to a limited degree. I don't have what would be called a pleasant natural tone to my voice, so I keep to backing vocals mostly. I am better at coaching/ recording singers than I am at singing myself.

Some of us just don't have it naturally, or don't have the desire to build upon it. I'd rather smoke a cigarette, than be a singer. I record other peoples broken dreams now. lol!

Keep pushing forward, and feel free to come back anytime you have any questions.

Nice to meet you, whatever your name is. :)

hey if its not your dream, then why chase it you know? and if you're putting your focus into helping others with their dreams, then the more power to you :)

Thanks so much, you guys have been so friendly and helpful! I'm Aly by the way, nice to meet you :)

Hi, I'm a gal myself, and wanted to let you know you CAN sing and do have a good voice, but I think you really sell it short by literally phrasing everything short. Meaning that your words don't always flow; it's almost like a sing/talk sometimes and when you get a vibrato or something going, you cut it short instead of letting it be smooth and seamless. I think they call it staccato? You have to let your voice ride out the transitions between words more. I think they call that legato. Does that make sense? But other than that you're on key and have a great voice, so I think if you just work on keeping your flow fluid you'll be great! Also, opinions are like a$$ O's....I agree that person sounds jealous. So go prove them wrong! :)

Nice to meet you Aly. :)

Keep faith in yourself. That is the key to being a great singer; confidence.
