I've just started mixing this, but I'm wondering what you think of the arrangement - the vocal intro in particular - does it work?

Please respond before the world ends.

Personally, I think it is too long. It is "interesting", but not really a hook that holds your attention for that long. I like the song better once the guitar comes in.

Wow, this is great dobro - love the organic groove you build up in the instrumentation and the vocal arrangement is excellent. One of the best songs I've heard on here in a while.

Re. the introduction, it doesn't not work (if that makes any sense!), but it's probably my least favourite part of the song. It's just a judgement call for you whether it's fundamental to your idea of the song or whether it can be shortened a bit.

Enjoyed it a helluva lot though. Good stuff man

Okay, based on your and snus's responses, I'm posting the shorter version, without the intro.

[It's 'interesting'.]

Okay, that's all I need to tell me what I want to know. I don't have a producer, so I've got forum comments instead. I struggle with calls like this - I think I should just learn how to dump stuff when I can't make my mind up.

Thanks you guys.

I really think dropping that was a good call. The song now holds my attention from the first note. Nothing seems to be drawn out too far.

It is a pretty cool, quaint production. I always have enjoyed hearing your music dobro. Your recording techniques over the years have gotten better and better! :)

Maybe bring up those little bells or whatever they are at the end of the song?

Wild man. This is a description that I would never think of together, but you got a real Byrne/Eno/rootsy kinda vibe. Then the vocal bit is a little tribal, and the spoken word bits are something outta the Stan Ridgeway playbook. All in all pretty cool. I'd like to feel more low end - but ask anyone, that's all I ever talk about is low end and 'more bass'. Cool stuff. I think you got something here...

Thanks, chuckduffy - that's encouraging. (I had to look up Stan Ridgeway, though - he looks like Ron Wood's brother.) Plus, in one thread I get good mix advice and someone outs Ed Rei. Ed Rei, man! I own Monster cables and an AT 4050 because of Ed Rei. And all this before the world ends. Just in time.

And I had to look up Ed Rei :-) AT 4050 is a great piece of gear. I have a 4033 I use constantly. Hope your world ending came out ok - mine was really cool!

Okay, thanks to snus and robgreen, but I can't take this further any more - I'm not hearing it any more, so I'm going to put it to bed for a while. I've still got doubts about the EQ on the bvs and the presence of the bell keys, but I'll hear it right away in two weeks.
