beginner violinist

I've already made a few nice G & D strings riffs.

I've also broke the A string. And believe I over did it on the rosin. I'll be calling my local shop and seeing if he knows how to treat a violin :p

Like PR Hunt says, it only needs a couple of milimetres out with the fingering and you could inspire murder, mayhem and magahoustous !
The violin however, is one of my favourite instruments. In an inventive rock, jazz, folk or Indian setting {or a combination thereof}, it's beauty and power is rivalled by very few instruments. If there's one instrumentalist I'd love to be on great terms with right now, it's a viola/violinist.

A lot of the stuff I played sounded like it was straight off of a horror movie soundtrack!

It's pretty inspiring though. Already given me two song ideas/seeds and a much better understanding of pitch.
And a hobby away from a hobby of sorts.
:D

Now to figure out what to buy my sister...

How on earth did you even break the A string? Strings are really hard to break unless you pulled the string through the plug too hard.

I've played viola for quite a bit actually. So much so that if I were to pick it up again, I would have a pretty good sense of what to play and how to play.

First things first. You're going to sound god-awful for the first year. This instrument isn't like the piano where you could press down a key and all is well. It isn't like the guitar where, if you mess up, it's usually because you're not pressing down hard enough which results in a "plunk."

This is a violin. If you don't press down correctly, if your bow stroke is un-smooth and not placed well....... screeeeeeeeeeeeech.

But don't fret! When you get better, the instrument really starts to come alive! How good do you plan on getting?

As for lessons, the biggie right now would be to learn how to read notes. Once you get that down, and learn how to read fluently, you will be on your way.

Yes that's for sure CofF! The violin lets you know right off if your not up to par.

I think a sitar might be a suitable reprisal!

That's just as bad as violin in playing it, not due to the screech but to the tuning. The things fall out of tune every song and you have to be good enough to play and tune at the same time.

Fleet, you own a sitar right? How is that going?
