Hey, that was really cool....get a real Beck vibe, keyboard has a cool early Floyd sound to it. Vocals sound great, really nice clean recording with everything sitting nicely in the mix on my headphones....really enjoyed this!

...good lyrics too

Oh yeah...just to be clear, robgreen wrote these lyrics :).

Thanks queepster! Glad you had a chance to check it out and thanks for the good word. :)

Sounds like what Beck tried to be.
I like it.
You could have used the same bass track, duplicated it, run a high pass on one to the effect and a low pass on the other to give you more bottom end but that's not essential as I like what you've done.
Laid back, quirky, obscure and cool too!

Hey, thanks a lot ray! I'm pretty sure Beck can be whatever he wants. A lot of comparisons on this one though, which is of course flattering.

I listened to this last night sandwiched between two of his tunes and it didn't really measure up - a lot smaller sounding and not as much variation. Closer than I thought it would sound though, so I'm making progress - not that I want to sound like him specifically, but you know what I mean...

Thanks for listening and for the advice.:)

Well - I know what you mean... I've been recommending this line for a *long* time. If you want to know how you are doing, just stack your stuff up in a sandwich of music you enjoy listening to. It's a great way to analyze mixes. I keep shooting for not even noticing one of my songs in the middle of a bunch of other stuff :-)

That's a sort of 'slow food' variation on comparing your mixes to commercial stuff you admire while you're mixing. I wouldn't say it's a great way to analyze your mix, but it's a great way to get a quick impression of what's not living up to the others and how it's not living up to them.

yeah - I never actually do it while I'm mixing. what you describe is what I use it for - 'analyze mixes' was not quite the right word for when and why I do it :-)

lol.

You grab this thread out of the nether regions merely to highlight my own awareness of my inadequacies! Damn you !

:p :D

No, I get what you're both saying and I think side by side comparisons are sometimes a good general reality check. In my case, it showed me that it's not so much my mixing that's holding me back (not that I have that nailed or anything, but...), it's more the songs and arrangements themselves. No one ever tells me, "hey, that's a great song, if only you could mix it better", you know?

Anyway, coincidentally, I did revisit this song last night after stepping away for a while and I have a completely different, new mix. Much more bass and kick, louder keys and I tried to change it up a bit by removing some elements after each of the 1st two choruses to create more dynamics, variety, whatever...I think the 2nd break came out cool...the 1st one?....eh, not so much maybe. If anyone would be willing to check this out one more time and chime in, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Okay. My legal team say that if you edit the rest of posts in this thread to also include the above statement, we will withdraw charges

Oops. Not sure what happened. Thanks for letting me know! I fixed it above and here it is again just in case:

Liking the new mix very much. Haven't directly A/B'd it, but it seems all round clearer; the stronger kick punctuates the whole song more effectively and the dynamics are better. I think you're done Pete

Great. I'll have my people get in touch with your people and we'll work something out.

Thank you for checking it out again. Yes, it has a thump to it now. I think maybe I'll stick with this mix. I'll probably change the Soundcloud version to this one and leave it at that...

Listened to the 2nd mix, imho I still think the kick is a little buried. I think you could get a little more separation with some careful use of the stereo field, eq, and some volume changes.

It still sounds good though.

I too would actually like to hear more kick.

Yeah, I think I may've actually kind of messed this mix up a bit. The tracking was pretty solid for me this time around, but I mixed it as I went, bouncing down lots of sub mixes to make room for everything on 24 tracks. I still have the original 5 drum tracks buried in a list of virtual tracks, but all of the settings have since been changed. At this point the drums are a stereo mix of their own.

The latest mix sounds good on phones, ok on speakers, but super rumbly in the car. :(

I may go back and revisit this, but I'm not sure. I'm still bothered by the first break with just the keys and drum machine, and I agree the low end could still use some work. Thanks for listening!

I like the heck out of this one dudes. Great collab. I like where it is now but good luck on where it goes from here. Great tune and great listening. Heat.

Hey trump! Nice of you to drop by. You seem to be on a by-monthly visitation schedule or something? Hope to see you around more.

Glad you liked this one - I'm afraid it goes nowhere from here - straight to my "heatmiser's greatest hits" CD that gets a fair amount of play at my house, but very little exposure eleswhere.
